Biography

Tabitha Coates Adams was born January 8, 1740, in Coventry Parrish, Somerset County, Maryland, and died 1776, in Clinch, Tazewell County, Virginia. [1] [2]

Tabitha is the daughter of Samuel Adams and Charity (Coates) Adams. In 1755, in Clinch, Tazewell County, Virginia, Tabitha married Brigadier General William Russell, a Continentail Army soldier of the Revolutionary War.

Samuel Adams daughters are mentioned in Old Virginia records as having deeded tracts of land to Gen. George Washington. [3]

Research Notes

DEATH: THE DRAPER MANUSCRIPT, 6C page 178-179. "Gen Russell's wife died 17th Apr '76-his oldest daughter (3rd child) born in Nov 60. -Gen Russell died 17th January, 1793, in christian hope at Col. Thos. Allen's, Shenandoah Co., Va., in abt his fifty fith year. Col. William H. Moore who has distinguished himself in the Texican war of Independence, is a grandson of Capt. Wm. Bowen- In '70 when he first emigrated to the county, he stopped one year at Castleswoods, on Copper Creek {where run?} into Clinch, & there lived until his wife died in April (17th) '76 when soon after the Rev war was breaking out removed his family to New River - sojourned temporarily for a time, then near Gen. Campbell's - who protected his family in his (Russell's) absence in the army.

"Colonel Courts was of the family of Courts or Courte, of Stoke-Gregory, in Somerset. The founder of the Maryland branch was "the Honorable Captain John Courte, gent.," who was Burgess and member of the Maryland Assembly, and member of the Governor's Council till his death in 1697. His son, colonel John Courts, gent., was, in 1699, granted the manor of Clean Drinking (now owned by his descendant, Colonel Jones', and after serving in many public Charles county offices, died 1702, having issue the aforesaid Colonel John Courts, who died 1747. Some of his descendants in the South write their surname as it is pronounced, COATES."
