Biography

Samuel Adams was the son William Adams (spelled Addams in Ipswich records).[1][2] His mother's name is not known. His birth year has been estimated to have been somewhere between 1635 (Holman Ms.)[3] and 1642 (1664 marriage year). The assumed birth year is material to his possible birth location. He was likely born in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His father removed to Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1641, so there is a chance that Samuel was born there.

Samuel married Mehitable Norton, daughter of George and Mary (Unknown) Norton, on 20 December 1664, in Ipswich. [4]

Samuel and Mehitable had children, all born in Ipswich:[2][3][5][6]

  1. Mehitable (1665), married John Osborn in 1685, in Ipswich[7]
  2. Mary (1667), no further records
  3. Samuel (1670), no further records
  4. William (1672/3), married Abigail Oviatt in 1698, in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut Colony[8]
  5. Freegrace (ca 1675), married Mary Galpin in 1700/1, in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony[9]
  6. Sarah (1677), married Moses Johnson in 1703, in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut Colony[10]
  7. Elizabeth (ca 1679), married James Brisco in 1699, in Milford[11]

The births of Freegrace and Elizabeth do not appear in Ipswich vital records, and the Norton and Essex Antiquarian references cited above do not include them as children of Samuel and Mehitable. They are listed as their children by Donald Lines Jacobus, also cited above, in a correction to his Families of Old Fairfield. Jacobus writes that his corrections were the result of new information given to him and further research on his part, but he does not give specific details.

Circumstantial evidence for the parents of Freegrace and Elizabeth Adams is that Mehitable Norton had siblings named Mary, Freegrace, Sarah, and Elizabeth. Mehitable's brother Freegrace was killed in King Philip's War in 1675, so (her son) Freegrace Adams may have been named in his memory. A daughter Elizabeth is consistent with Mehitable naming children after her Norton siblings. Further, a William Adams appears in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony about 1697 along with a Freegrace, Sarah, and Elizabeth Adams. (Abbott in her Families of early Milford, Connecticut lists William (m. Abigail Oviatt 1698), "Freelove", Elizabeth (m. James Brisco 1699), Sarah (m. Moses Johnson 1703).[12] "Freelove" was probably a typo for "Freegrace".) So it would appear that the four youngest children of Samuel and Mehitable Adams, all unmarried, removed to Stratford together at about the same time. Finally, the executor of Freegrace's will in 1750, his "loving Cosn" Samuel Adams, may have been the son of Freegrace's brother William, of Milford.

On 16 April 1694 Samuel sold his farm in Ipswich to Walter Fairfield, including all meadow and swamp lands, except for carve-outs to his brothers John and Nathaniel. Mehitable agreed to forfeit her right of dowery as part of the sale.[13]

No Ipswich death records have been found for Samuel and Mehitable. It is possible that they removed to Connecticut with their younger children.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
