Rebecca was born to John and Abigail Smith Adams in Hartford, Connecticut Colony, in about August 1658.[1] Note: some genealogies say she was born in Greater Egg Harbor, New Jersey. While several of her brothers settled in Great Egg Harbor, and several of her children, including Richard, followed them there, no persuasive support has been cited for that being her birthplace or even her residence later in life. Marriage
Rebecca Adams married Richard Risley in Hartford about 1676.[1][2]
Further evidence for her birth, parentage, and marriage is found in a deposition recorded in Connecticut Towns and Lands, vol 5 p. 204, reprinted in NEHGR Vol. 67: “Hartford, May ye 20th 1726 These may certifie whome it may concern yt I Richard Risly of Hartford do of my Certain Knowledge know yt my father John Addams formerly of Hartford, Deceased, had seven children, viz: 4 sons & three Daughters: one son Died without issue: I married one of ye Daughters & Edward Higbee married another: John Brush married ye other: ye sisters are all Deceased but they have left Children as I herd by Jeremiah Addams viz, two higbee & 2 Brushes which ware well last I herd from them: ye above written I am Ready to testify if cald, witness my hand. RICHARD RISLE” The article asserts that “other documents” identify Rebecca Risley, Abigail Higbee and Sarah Brush.[3]
Events
Birth
Aug 1658, Great Egg Harbor, Atlantic, New Jersey.[4]
abt August 1658, Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.[5][6][7][8][9]
Richard Risley gave testimony, 20 May 1726, that:
"My father John Addams formerly of Hartford Deceased, had seven children Viz: 4 sons and three Daughters . . . I married one of ye Daughters . . . ye sisters are all Deceased . . . . "[3]
"The probate of the estate of John Adams in November, 1670, calls his daughter Rebeckah aged twelve years in August last."[10]
Family
Richard Risley, born August 2, 1648. Married prior to 1668 probably when he and his wife were " admitted to full communion in the First Church of Hartford." In 1683 there is a record there, that three of their children were baptized in this church. Under date of May, 1687, it appears they had children baptized whose names are obliterated. The following appears in the baptismal record: "Child to Richard Risley : Mary daughter to Richard Risley baptized April 23rd, 1693; Hannah (Anna or Anner), baptized April 12th, 1695."[11]
The defective church record and the interim of time between marriage and birth and baptism records may he explained by the fact that Richard and wife lived on the east side of the " Great River," south of the Hockanum river both of which rivers must be crossed by boats. The Highway between Hartford and East Hartford had not been constructed and the roadway parallel to the east side of the river was hardly opened.[11]
Richard Risley married Rebecca Adams. Note that Risley Family History source states his wife's name has not been discovered [12]
Marriage: abt 1676, Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.[13][6][7][14]
They had the following children (Note Risley Family source has all children, other than Susannah: [12]
Before 20 May 1726, Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.[3]
May 20, 1726, Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.[15][6][16]
