Biography

George was born before 1846. He may have been in Giles CTY, TN or Lincoln CTY, TN 1865-1867. The family doesn't show on the 1870 AL census. He passed away before 1900. In the 1880 census, the family lived at Twp 1, Beat 6, Wickham, Limestone Cty, AL, which is just across the TN line. [1]

George W. Adams (c.1846-unknown)

Note that some secondary sources say that his middle name was Washington, but this information has not been confirmed by this contributor. Also note that secondary sources give a number of different dates for his death: several say 1895; several others say 1910; one says 21 Feb 1910; one says 9 Oct 1910 – none of these dates has been confirmed by this contributor. However, George W. Adams does not appear to be listed in the 1900 census, and three of his young children (Sarah E., William, and James) are listed as living with the family of his oldest son, Henry Sylvester Adams; so it is most likely that both George and Martha died before 1900. (Unfortunately, almost all of the 1890 census records were destroyed in a fire before they could be microfilmed, so no records for George W. Adams and family are available for that year.)

Census records for George W. Adams and family

From the 1880 census for Limestone County, Alabama:

Adams, Geo. W. W M 34 Farmer Tenn Ala Tenn
— Martha E. W F 34 Wife Keeping home Virginia N.C. N.C.
— Henry S. W M 14 Son at home Tennessee Tenn Va
— Squire H. W M 6 Son Alabama Tenn Va
— George W. W M 4 Son Tenn Tenn Va
— John W. W M 2 Son Alabama Tenn Va
— Sarah E. W F 2/m Daughter Ala Tenn Va

Note that the states listed at the end of each line are (in the following order):
birthplace, father's birthplace, mother's birthplace

No census records are available for 1890 because over 90% of them were destroyed in a fire before they could be microfilmed.

This contributor has been unable to locate George W. Adams or his wife Martha in the 1900 census. However, here is the listing for the family of their oldest son, Henry Sylvester Adams:

From the 1900 census for Limestone County, Alabama (Pleasant Grove district):

Adams, Henry S. Head W M Dec 1865 34 M 7 Alabama Alabama Alabama
— Susan E. Wife W F Jan 1875 24 M 7 Alabama Alabama Alabama
— Henry S. Son W M Nov 1893 6 S _ _ Alabama Alabama Alabama
— Mary E. Daughter W F Oct 1896 3 S _ _ Alabama Alabama Alabama
— John D. Son W M Feb. 1900 3/12 S _ _ Alabama Alabama Alabama
— Sarah E. Sister W F Mar 1883 17 S _ _ Alabama Alabama Alabama
— William Brother W M Jan 1883 17 S _ _ Alabama Alabama Alabama
— James Brother W M May 1886 14 S _ _ Alabama Alabama Alabama

{Note that there is an error with Sarah's birth date and age. According to the 1880 census she was born in 1880, not in 1883, which would make her 20 rather than 17 in 1900. Note also that the place of birth information appears to be incorrect for just about every member of the family, since according to the 1880 census, Henry was born in Tennessee, as was his father, and his mother was born in Virginia.}

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
