Biography

Mary Jane was born on September 29,1864. She was the daughter of William Adamson and Margueretta Clifford. Mary Jane was married twice. Her first marriage was to Thomas S. Margwerter before 1888. No marriage certificate found (to date). Her daughter, Florence, was born in 1889 in Philadelphia. Thomas passed away in 1891. Mary Jane remarried in 1893. Her second husband was Franklin Smith Gardner Jr. They had seven children together between 1894, and 1905. Mary Jane and Frank lived at the same address in Philadelphia from at least 1910, until her death in 1938.

She passed away on March 10, 1938, and was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham, Philadelphia, on 14 March 1938.

  • United States Federal Census 1910: 120 W. Westmoreland Street, Philadelphia. Age 45. Now has five children with husband Franklin. Daughter Florence Margwerter still residing and listed as step-daughter to Frank.
  • United States Federal Census 1920: 120 W. Westmoreland Street, Philadelphia. Age 55. Residing at same address. Five children still living at home. Son Frank Jr. listed as "Widower", and there is a grand daughter Dorothy, listed at residence. Mary Jane's daughter Florence (from her first marriage) is not at residence.
  • United States Federal Census 1930: 120 W. Westmoreland Street, Philadelphia. Age 64. At same residence with husband, Frank, daughters, Catherine and Pearl, and grand daughter Dorothy (listed as daughter in this census).
