Source: S51 Title: Girard Press, 1 December 1938Adamson, Ireneus J.Ireneus J. Adamson, son of William C. and Hannah Adamson was born inMercer County, Pennsylvania, February 26, 1856. He lived inPennsylvania until the Fall of 1868, when he migrated to Kansas with hisfolks and settled on a farm north and west of Crawfordsville, which waslater known as Elk Horn Ranch.Experiencing the hardships of the early pioneers, he walked, accompaniedby an uncle, John Adamson, from a point near Kansas City to the presenthome near Lightning Creek.The family occupied a log cabing and secured a living by farming andbuilding many of the f irst homes, churches and public buildings, whichis now the city of Girard.At the age of 21, Mr. Adamson, accompanied by three Girard friends,crossed the plains in a covered wagon to Leadville, Colorado, where hespent his young manhood, engaging in various activities. During a visithome he met Lucy May LaFontaine, a Crawford County Teacher, whom helater married at Colorado Springs. July 30, 1884.The following year they returned to this community for three years, thenmoved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he engaged in the building andcontracting business until 1898, when he returned to the farm which heacquired from the Adamson heirs. He engaged in general farming until thedeath of his devoted wife in 1926, retiring, he spent a greater part ofhis time among his children and many friends.Mr. Adamson was a man of sterling character, devoted to his family,always thinkingg of their good and striving to help in many ways. He hadbeen very friendly with those about him and went out of his way manytimes to call upon them in sickness and in trouble.Mr. Adamson passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs LillianSlusher, Erie, Saturday at 5:25 a. m. following a brief illness, aged 82years, 9 months.He is survived by three daughters, Mrs C. F. Slusher, Erie, Mrs G. L.Schweitzer, Almeda, California, and Mrs C. W. Popkins of Wichita. Foursons, Earl L. of Idaho Fall, Idahoh, Irenus J. of Seal Beach,California, Paul D. of Rigby, Idaho and Frank of Girard. Three sisters,Mrs Emma Wolf of Erie, Mrs J. H. Hapenny of Denver and Mrs Anna Meloy ofPhoenix, Arizona, and one brother, William H. Adamson of Laveta, Colorado.Two sisters, Ida and Maggie and one brother, the late L. P. Adamsonhaving preceded his passing. Nineteen grand children and three greatgrand children besides a host of other relatives and friends to mournhis passing.Funeral services were hehld in the Christian Church of Girard a 2o'clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev.
