Biography

Ruth J. Zilhaver, 85, of Seminole, Fla., died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in her home surrounded by her children.

Born July 16, 1928, in Lincoln Place, she was the daughter of Robert and Helen Shoemaker Adamson.

On June 9, 1951, she married Franklin P. Zilhaver. He preceded her in death July 29, 1995.

Ruth retired from the Clarion Area School District after over 20 years of service as an elementary art teacher in Clarion County.

She was baptized Aug. 7, 1932, and confirmed April 13, 1941, as a member of the Clarion First United Methodist Church.

She was a graduate of Clarion-Limestone High School in 1941, where she was a basketball manager, yearbook staff member and a seamstress for the drama and music department. Ruth graduated with a degree in art education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1951. She loved to travel with her friends and family across the United States and around the world from Afghanistan to Yugoslavia. She helped sew thousands of bears for cancer patients through the Sojourn Bear Organization.

Ruth was a member of the Clarion County Civic Club, Clarion County Art Association, the Women's Club of Seminole Gardens, Friends of Seminole Library and the P. Buckley Moss Society. She was a lifetime member of the PSEA and NEA. Ruth served as an officer of her condo association for many years.

Ruth is survived by two children, Karen J. Zilhaver of Clearwater, Fla., and Robert F. Zilhaver and his wife Amanda of DuBois; and five grandchildren: J. Robert Sutton, Laura Hubbard, Sara N. Zilhaver, Polly J. Zilhaver and Robert F. Zilhaver Jr.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Martha G. Adamson.

Memorial services will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug.13, 2013, at the Seminole Garden Clubhouse, Seminole, Fla., by Rev. Robert F. Zilhaver and at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at Clarion First United Methodist Church, Clarion, by the Rev. Dr. Deryl K. Larsen.

Burial will be at Clarion Cemetery, Clarion.
