Biography

Gilbert Adamson was born on 22 March 1932 at Alfred Street, Stromness, Orkney, Scotland. His birth was registered on 4 April 1932 at Stromness[1] with the informant being his father, George Borwick Moar Adamson. His mother was Betsy Wood Walls. He was baptised on 22 March 1933 at Stromness, Orkney on his first birthday.

He was educated at Stromness Academy between 1944 and 1946.

He was a baker between 1946 and 1964, then worked for Batholomews Printers until 1980. From then until 1994, he worked for Scottish Gas. He retired in 1994 from the Gas Board aged 62.

Gil married Betsy Young Davidson in 1955 at Newington[2]. They had one son.

He went on regular vacations.

1975 Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. This would be the last family holiday together, as Keith would start going on his own holidays after turning 18.
1980 Greece for his Silver Wedding.
1981 Malta. Bett and Gil went with Meg and Tam and Alice and John.
1991 Stromness, Orkney. Two weeks with son, Keith. This was Gil's first time back home since burying his dad in 1956. This was Keith's first time in Orkney. He met Gil's aunty, Rita Adamson, her son Ronnie, girlfriend Joyce and Joyce's son Colin. Also met Gil's old school mates, Jim Merriman (Gil was Jim's best man when he married Iris Marwick ) and Ronald Gunn.
1995 Rhine cruise to Germany, France and Switzerland to celebrate his Ruby Wedding.
1997 Ayr, Ayrshire from 31 July to 2 August.
1999 London, England from 2 to 11 April.
2000 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 6 to 21 May.

Gilbert died on 11 January 2010 aged 77 years at Edinburgh. He died Monday evening after logging his diabetic reading in his diary, having his tea and doing the dishes. He was found sitting in his chair in front of the TV, quite peaceful and showing no sign of distress in his face or posture, by his son Keith at 17.15 on 13 January. His death was registered at Edinburgh, Central[3]. He was cremated at on 26 January 2010 at 11.00 am at Warriston Crematorium, Edinburgh. His wake was held at Craigentinny Bowling Club, Craigentinny Crescent, Edinburgh.

Research Notes

Although Gil died on Monday 11 January 2010 between 6-10pm (evidence from his diabetic diary and the Evening News confirms this), it is police and government procedure that the official date of death is Wednesday 13 January 2010, when his son Keith found him.
