Biography

Charles was born in 1865 in Grant County, Indiana. His father died when he was young; in the 1880 census, he and his mother and brother are living with his maternal grandparents. While there, Charles worked in his grandfather's carriage shop.

In 1895, he married Ida Fydell.[1] They had two children, and then he volunteered for the Spanish-American War.[2] He was very proud of his military service.

Charles and Ida had 6 children altogether: Florence L. (m. George Young), Ruth H. (m. Marion Hubbard), W. Gilette (never married), Catharine F. (m. Marcus Rough), Richard R. (died young), Mildred L. (m. Whitney Darrow, Jr.)
