Please note: Although there are questions about when Hannah died and perhaps her second marriage, we know she didn't marry Samuel Griswold (1715) who went to Canada nor was she the mother of Jeremiah or Delight.
From Griswold Family: England-America. P. 214.
79. Samuel (4), b. Guildford, Conn., Feb. 12, 1709 (Samuel (3), Thomas (2), Michael (1); m. in Guildford, Feb. 8, 1734/5, Hannah Adkins, daughter of Benjamin and Jane, of Middleton, Conn., b. Oct. 12, 1712.
Very little information could be obtained in regard to Samuel. Died 1758. Administration of his estate, New Haven, Conn. Probate, Dec. 3, 1758. Where they resided is unknown except it is probable they resided in Guildford for a time in the Black Rock District as the children are recorded both in Buildford and Durham.
Children Griswald
Hannah married second Sept. 27, 1764, John Russell, of East Haven, Conn. (John Russell of East Haven and Hannah Griswold of White Haven, Sept. 27, 1764). Below, on the same page of this document, (Early Connecticut Marriages, Book 6 found on Ancestry.com), there is the marriage of Hannah and Samuel's daughter Anna to Israel Munson a year later.
Where is Hannah Adkins Griswold Buried?
On Find A Grave there is memorial No. 103267440 at the Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven which, at the time of this writing, refers to Hannah GIBBS Griswold. The tombstone in the photograph clearly shows Dec. 14, 1806, ae 93. Could this actually be the grave of Hannah ADKINS Griswold?
Hannah Gibbs Griswold was born in 1716. That would make her 90 if she died in 1806. She lived in Litchfield. Her husband Jeremiah and a couple of her children and her parents are also buried in this community. Why would Hannah Gibbs be buried in New Haven? I don't think we have any information on when Hannah Gibbs died. I believe the grave at Grove Street might very well belong to Hannah Adkins Griswold. Her son Samuel is buried here as well as some of his children.
Hannah Adkins Griswold was born in 1713. If she died in 1806, then she would have been 93, the age given on the tombstone.
Unfortunately there are several problems with this notion. There is the awkward fact that the author of “The Griswold Family: England-America” claims that Hannah Griswold married a John Russell (Rosewell?) in 1764. A marriage record does show up on Ancestry for that date but not information for John Russell. How do we know that the marriage record belongs to this Hannah Griswold? It would be nice to examine the original record to see if it indicates Hannah Griswold, widow, or second marriage. Or, would a family ignore the second marriage if they were to bury a mother with her family?
The death records found on Ancestry are quite confusing. There are three different records for Hannah Griswold derived from Connecticut, Deaths and Burials Index. The one from FHL film No. 3233, says Hannah Griswold, b. abt 1713, age at death 93, Death date, 18 Dec. 1806, Conn.. The one from FHL film No. 3349 says, Hannah Griswold, b. abt 1716, age at death, 93, death date, 14 Dec. 1809, Conn. The one from FHL film No. 3133, says Hannah Griswold, b.abt 1716, age at death 93, death date, 14 Dec. 1809, Conn.. Therefore, none of these references match the information on the gravestone. Nor do any of these references have images. The information derived from the Connecticut, Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices, says Hannah Griswold, b. abt 1713, death date, 1806, New Haven, Conn., age at death 93. This, at least, matches the grave information and gives the location where she died.
Then there are two typewritten lists derived from the Connecticut, Hale, Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices. One gives Hannah Griswold, b. abt 1716, death, 14 Dec. 1809, age 93, Grove Street Cemetery. Did the person transcribing the information turn a 9 into a 6? And then subtracted 93 from 1809? Which mistake got carried on from list to list? Because we can see quite clearly in the Find A Grave photograph that the inscription reads 1806. Another version of the Hale Collection says Griswold, ??? son of Hannah Griswold, died Jan. 21, 1804, age 58 yrs. Below this information, it says Griswold, Hannah, died Dec. 14, 1809, 93 years. But from this same collection, depending on what list you're looking at, we can see Samuel Griswold, b. abt 1747, death date 1804, New Haven Conn., age at death 57. Hannah Gibbs Griswold didn't have a son named Samuel but Hannah Adkins did which is why I think that Findagrave Memorial #103267440 belongs to Hannah Adkins Griswold.
