Biography

Efforts to identify Wilson’s parents have not been successful. Family folklore combined with genetic testing by the author indicates that Wilson may have been born a Meadows This genetic and paper trail data suggest Wilson may be a descendant of the Meadow living in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties in (VA) WV in the 1700s to early 1800. It is hoped that either Male or Female descendants will contact the author to assist in this project. He was born in 1815/1816 in Greenbrier Co., VA(WV) (source-1850 & 1860 Boone Co, Census). Another source indicates July 11, 1816 Greenbrier Co., VA(WV) (Source Find a grave data for Camp Chase Military Prison, Columbus Ohio) CIVIL War Records in National Archives, Washington, DC March 26, 1863. Wilson Adkins, farmer, was captured by Union solders at his home at the foot of Drawdy Mountain, Rock Creek, Boone Co. He was charged with “violating oath and aiding and abetting rebels. Family Folklore states that the family hid their honey in the attic due to Union soldiers passing frequently. Union soldiers took Wilson and one of their cows. When it’s calf called the cow broke loose from the soldiers and came back to the house. Taken to Camp Piatt, a small Union camp across the Kanawha River from Marmet, Kanawha Co., WV Removed from Camp Piatt and sent to Athenaeum Military Prison, Wheeling, WV. Sunday, May 10, 1863 Sent from Athenaeum Prison to Camp Chase Union Prison, Columbus, OH. Tuesday, May 12, 1863 Arrived at Camp Chase, Assigned to Prison #2, Barracks #16. August 7, 1863, buried Row #1, Grave #2, Double Burial with Carter, Thomas L. PVT 8 KY CAV. Headstone Row 1 Grave 2. , AUG 16,1863 March 13, 1864, Death Record @ Camp Chase; Wilson Adkins, Citizen of Boone County Died Friday, Tuesday, March 16, 1993 Harry Atkins communicated by letters and follow up telephone discussion with The Department of Veteran Affairs in Dayton, Ohio regarding a headstone for Wilson Wednesday, July 21, 1993 Harry Atkinsr received a letter stating that a new headstone was being installed with Carter on front and Wilson on the back . Personal description-Prison records at Athenaeum Prison and Camp Chase give; Age-47, Height-5' 8 3/4", Blue eyes, Grey Hair and Whiskers, Dark Skin" Some records indicate his name is Wilson. Another lists him as Wilson with William penciled in.
