John B. Adkins, 69

CHESTER W. Va. - Distinguished civic leader, John B. Adkins, 69 of Chester passed away in the emergency room at East Liverpool City Hospital on Monday March 2, 2015. He had been in failing health in recent years.

Along with many of the Adkins family, John was born in Branchland, W.Va.; on Jan. 7, 1946.

He was one of seventeen children born to the late Elza B. Adkins Sr. and Opal Cummings Adkins.

Since 1970, John, along with his brother Elza B. Adkins Jr. had been associated with the Russ Davis IGA Food Liner in Chester which was owned by his sister and brother-in-law. Upon Russ and Dean Davis's retirement John and Jr. became the sole owners of the store.

John's other business interests included Adkins Rentals, which included several properties in the area.

He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in East Liverpool and he was a member of the last graduating class at Chester High School in 1963.

John was an avid car enthusiast having grown up in the romantic era of muscle cars. To this day he maintained an impressive stable of vintage cars.

A few of John's civic involvements included being a member of the Board of Directors of the former First National Bank of Chester, a member of the board of Hancock County Parks and Recreation, a former member of the Chester Kiwanis club where he used his special recipe for the annual pancake dinners, and a member of the former Mountaineer Rotary where he served as treasurer.

John's family members who preceded him in death, in addition to his parents are his brothers, Joshua, Russell, Lynneol, James, Jack, Woodrow, Elza Jr., and Wiser and his sisters, Rosetta and Jane Adkins, Janice Johnston, and Patty Miller.

He leaves his loving and devoted wife, Vicki Dray Adkins whom he married on Oct. 18, 1969, his children; Sean and wife Karri of Chester, Jonathan and wife Amanda of Dublin, Ohio; and Dawn Adkins of Chester; his very special grandchildren, August, Skylar, Seanessy, Jacob, and Ava; and his sisters, Betty Ray and Dean Davis of Lexington, N.C.; Mary Bevington of Standardsville, Va.; and Sue Warner and husband Ken of Ocala, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family invites friends to visit with them on Thursday March 5 at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester where they will be present from 2-8 p.m. Services will be at the funeral home 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Eric Edwards of the church officiating. His final resting place will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park in East Liverpool.
