NSSAR Ancestor #: 334127
Rank: Private

David was born about 1754 in Lunenberg County, Virginia to Mary Adkins and an unknown father. David's year of birth is based on him stating his age as 69 years old when he applied for his war pension in 1823.[1]

In a biography on the National Society Sons of the American Revolution website, under David's Patriot Ancestor record, it shows "In October 1777, David Adkins swore allegiance to America and begun the first of two 18 month enlistments. He first served in the company of Capt. John Walker under the Regimental Command of Col. George Washington. He was discharged in Camden Town, South Carolina and reenlisted 3 days later, this time in the company of Capt. David Laird. He was discharged in late 1780 in Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina. Once home, he continued to serve in the Henry Co., Virginia Militia." [2]

On May 27, 1784 he married Judith[3] and they had nine children. Although no record of Judith's death exists, she is assumed to have died sometime between the birth of her last child in 1806 and before David married his second wife.

David married Sylvia Adkins, as his second wife, on 19 May 1807. [4]

David went on to have ten children with Sylvia.

The 1830 US Census for Louisa, Kentucky shows that David had 6 males and 2 females in his household. [5] His war pension records show his children, who are living with him, as:

  • Enoch, aged about 15 years
  • Farma [Fanny], aged about 11 years
  • Goolsberry [Golesburry], aged about 9 years
  • Martin, aged about 6 years
  • Nichallberry, aged about 3 years
  • Elliott, aged about 1 year

David passed away on May 17th, 1836. [6][7]
