Lewis was granted 100 acres on 17 Nov 1794 for his service (Land Warrant 11866- on Fold3.com at https://www.fold3.com/image/11143693). There is a single reference card on Fold3 that mentions the 8th Virginia Regiment and to also look at the 3rd and 4th Regiments so it's possible he served with more than one unit. If he did, proving dates would be critical to knowing which battles he actually fought in. The only pension folder I located showed a Lewis Adkins from Henry County, WV who served in North Carolina but the pension started on 4 Mar 1831, after this Lewis passed away.
I believe we have 2 Lewis Adkins combined into one. There is a christening record which shows, Lewis Adkins s/o Lewis Adkins, born 22 Aug 1745, christened 29 Aug 1745. Godfathers: Nathaniel Felts and Nathaniel Felts jr. Godmother: Sarah Woodlan?

I just merged his profile with that of the Lewis that some claimed was the son of Mary Adkins, however she never had a son Lewis. I did disconnect the other from Mary first and then merged here. I added a research note to the profile because apparently there are several Lewis Adkins and an attempt was made to sort them out on a research paper that can be found here- https://www.adkins.ws/individual.php?pid=I12356
They have sound logic and while most of applies to another Lewis, it does contain information on this Lewis and explains who is who.
Here is what they show for Lewis:
You'd have to trace the whereabouts of the 4th Virginia Regiment to see if the bio above is factual. According to Wikipedia it appears correct (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4th_Virginia_Regiment).

I'm really not sure if any of this helps?

Research needs to separate these two Lewis'.
