According to his daughter, Connie: In April 1949, Carl enlisted in the Naval Reserves and attended radio and radar school at Norfolk Naval Air Station. He was discharged in January 1954. In late 1959 Carl and a friend heard about a plane that was grounded in Columbus, Ohio because of a faulty wing covering. The owner wanted to sell it cheap and fast so Carl and his friend bought it. They took the wings off, rented a low boy truck, brought it home and repaired the wing. They both took flight lessons and began to fly. Carl lived in Waverly, Ohio and flew out of Minford Airport in Minford, Ohio. In 1961 Carl moved and went to work at Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Co. (the largest ship yard in the world). He worked as 1st Class Specialist of Instrument Calibration. Carl would, some time, go out on test runs on the USS Lewis and Clark Submarine. Some would take him to New York and Baltimore. Carl donated a gallon and a half of blood in his life time. In 1970, Carl was tired of the rat race in the big city and moved to the small town of Wheelersburg, Ohio (born in the country and returned to the country). He bought a small "mom and pop" grocery store that he soon converted into a grocery-electronic-variety business where he met customers and salesmen that soon became his friends. On April 30th of 1979, Carl died of an aneurysm at 59 years young. Carl married Ruby Jewel Johnson and had 10 children. He was a strict but well loved man by his entire family.

The owner of the plane wanted to sell it fast and cheap so Carl and his friend bought it. They took the wings off, rented a low-boy truck and took it home and repaired the wings. After fixing the wings they took flight lessons and began to fly. Carl lived in Waverly, Ohio and flew out of the Minford Airport.
In 1961 Carl moved back to Virginia and took a job at the Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock Company (largest in the world). He worked as a First Class Specialist of Instrument Calibration. Sometimes Carl would go out on test runs to evaluate and fine tune the on-board instruments. He did this on the USS Enterprise (worlds first nuclear powered aircraft carrier) and the USS Lewis and Clark Submarine. Some trips he was on went to New York and Baltimore.
