Grandma Crabb had passed away at half past five o'clock in the morning, and our community experienced a wave of sorrow seldom felt for the passing away of a soul, for grandma was so well known and beloved by our citizens that not one could not help but feel that her taking away was a personal loss. She had been ill nearly all winter, but through it all had been kind and patient anxiously a waiting the summons from Him whom she had so long trusted and believed, and at the last when the message came she held out her hands, saying; "Help me over." And thus this beautiful soul severed the bonds which held it to earth, and returned to Him who gave it. And, O, what a wonderful life to earth it was; this life which had been so devoted to God and mankind. She had been the mother of fifteen children, seven of whom, together with her husband have preceded her to the other side. Eight children, five girls and three boys, together with a large nummber of grandchildren and other relatives, and friends without number are left to mourn for her, yet not mourning as those without hope. The names of the children are Mrs. Nettie King, Rippey, Iowa, Mrs. Tilda Newman, Osceola, Ia., Mrs Jemima Godfrey, Mrs. Ellen Godfrey, Mrs Rilda Brobst, Mr Philip Crabb and Mr James Crabb of Jamaica. The funeral was held on Tuesday, conducted by Rev. W. Johnson, of the U.B. Church. After a brief service at the house the remains were taken to Dawson UB. church and services held there. This is added- born in Ohio, and died January 2 at her home in Jamaica Iowa aged 77 years and __ days. She was married Oct 20 1842, to James Crabb, and with him for nearly sixty years and upon his death which occurred in Nov 1889. They removed to Iowa in the early days and settled on a farm northeast of Jamaica, where they lived until a few years before the husbands death, when removed to town. While yet young she gave her heart to God in the Methodist Episcopal church at this place, and remained a consistent Christian woman up to the time of her death. Earth's loss is heaven's gain truly spoke Rev. Johnson in his eulogy over the remains.
My great grandmother must have been well thought of. There was a thank you note from the children. AMGH
