Biography

Thomas and Agnes Adkins were the parents of a John Adkins baptized at Sandy on 7th April 1639.

A record of their marriage has not been found, and Agnes's maiden name is not known.

Research notes

Thomas's identity is unclear. He could be an unrecorded brother of the John and Henry Adkins baptized at Sandy in 1612 and 1621, sons of Thomas Adkins.

Or he could be their father, with a second wife. This solution involves fewer missing records. It would make this profile a duplicate of Adkins-1268. But evidence to justify a merge is lacking.

I just now saw that a profile I manage was added as a son here. My John does not have sufficient proof of his mother's maiden name as his baptism only records her first name. No other records can be positively associated with him. I made the move to disconnect him but added him back so we could discuss it first.

The biggest issue that I see is that we don't have a baptism on this Thomas in Sandy. They are missing some records early on but if we assume he was at least 21 years old to get married that would put his baptism about 1609. During this time there are no missing records in the register. In fact, the only missing entries before our target date were between July 1578 and June 1579 and after the target date are between September 1652 and October 1653. The rest are complete but yet no Thomas is recorded.

This likely indicates that he was not from Sandy. While this does not remove him as being the possible father of John, it also does not help to prove the relationship. In order to keep John attached we would need to prove that this Thomas had a son named John which we simply can't do yet. We also can not prove this Thomas married an Agnes Hall. Around the 1630 timeframe there is no record of a Thomas Atkins (Adkins or other spelling) marrying an Agnes. But then that could be that he was from another parish. Free Reg is a great source but tends to not show all the spelling deviations and this family has quite a few, ha!

There is no burial of anyone in Sandy on 4 Apr 1665. But there is a burial of an illegible Adkins on 1 May 1665. Unless he left a will it would be nigh on impossible to prove that it was John. Is there anything that connects John to Stepney, the other burial mentioned in the profile?

I'm glad you mention the illegible name. I have notes in my files that the person who died was likely Elizabeth, a wife of John Adkins. They had several children nd they abruptly stop in 1665 which would make sense if the wife died on 1 May 1665 and also makes sense if she died due to complications with the birth of their last child, Thomas, who was born just before 20 March 1665 (page A22- https://archive.org/details/bedfordshirepari06bedf/page/22/mode/2up?q=atkins).

In 1667 we start seeing children of John Adkins and Elizabeth Bromsall with their son John who was baptized on 7 Jul 1667. This John and Elizabeth married on 4 June 1665. It is highly possible that the John is the same as his first wife Elizabeth was buried on 1 May 1665 and then he remarried on 4 June 1665. Men were not known to be widowed long if they had young children to raise and the timeline would fit. It also makes it confusing if he had two wives named Elizabeth!
