Biography

Charles Stewart Agnew was born on 20 April 1859 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia to Dr Agnew [Sir James Wilson Agnew] and Louisa [Louisa Mary Fraser]. He was baptised on 4 June 1859 at Chalmers Free Church, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The birth date is confirmed in The Mercury Birth Notices published on 12 May 1859 as 20 April 1859, location Tasmania, Australia.

For some reason his name is reversed on the marriage record to Stewart Charles Agnew, but the date on the Ancestry record of 4 December 1883 is confirmed on The Mercury Marriage Notices with his name in the correct order. He married Lucy Emmeline Reid.

Their family is discussed in Lucy Emmeline Reid's profile, which shows that he had five sons and one daughter.

Chas Stewart Agnew was aged 42 when he died, according to his Australia, Death Index record, in 1901. The circumstances of his premature death are described in the OBITUARY section of The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954) of Saturday 11 May 1901 on Page 3, together with his life story in great detail. An edited version follows: "With profound regret the news was yesterday received in Hobart of the death of Charles Stewart Agnew, son of Sir James Agnew, on board the s.s. Coogee. Mr. Agnew had died while in his bath from the effect of a fit. He was a passenger per the steamer for Melbourne, having left Launceston on Thursdav afternoon. He resided at Waverley, Oatlands, and estate of 12,000 acres, and was the only surviving son of the Hon. Sir James Agnew. He was educated at the High School, Hobart, and afterwards by private tutors, and when his studies were completed he travelled for twelve months, visiting Great Britain and the chief places of interest on the continents, returning home by way of the United States.

Mr. Agnew had devoted his time principally to the breeding of Merino sheep and Hereford cattle. He was a J.P., a member of the municipal council of Oatlands, director of the New Golden Gate Gold Mining Company, director of the Parattah Hotel Company, director of the Elwick Railway Company, and steward and committee man of the Tasmanian Racing Club. He was likewise a commissioner of the Fisheries Board, and helped to stock Lakes Sorell and Crescent, in the Oatlands district, with Californian trout and various other kinds of fish, which seem to be thriving well. As a sporting man, Mr. Agnew was known not only from one end of Tasmania to the other, but throughout the colonies, and his name as a turfite was synonymous with everything upright and honourable. He had a phenomenally successful horse racing career. The stable was disbanded in 1893, but he always had a horse or two in training.

The funeral will take place at Melbourne, his uncle, Mr. C. F. Fraser, will represent Sir James Agnew. The deceased will be buried alongside of his brother, Mr. Louis Agnew." This is confirmed in his Find A Grave record, with his burial in Melbourne General Cemetery in Plot MGC-CE-Comp-W-No-603 , at Carlton North, Melbourne City, Victoria, Australia[1]

He left a widow, five sons and a daughter.
