Notes

Note NI00155Jonathan Akers, son of Blackburn Akers, Sr. and Elizabeth Blackburn, was born about 1768 in Virginia. On 25 march, 1795 he was married to Hannah Howard, daughter of William Howard and Hannah Psalter in Montgomery county, Virginia. Information from Earl B. Akers, Sr. has indicated that Jonathan died on 11 December, 1827 in Montgomery county, Virginia, but this has proven to be inaccurate. 1

The 1810 census shows Jonathan with 2 WM under10, 1 WM 10-16, himself (26-45), 2 WF under 10, and 2 WF 10-16. Thus, Hannah is gone from the household. The 1820 census shows 4 WM under 10, 1 WM 10-16, Jonathan over 45, 3 WF 16-26, and 1 WF 26-45. 1

Information from various sources indicate that Jonathan married Rebecca Curnette, widow of John Chaffin, the elder. She was the head of her household in the 1810 Montgomery county, Virginia census with 2 WM under 10, 1 WF 10-16, and 1 WF 26-45, which is her. 1

In 1840 Jonathan and Rebecca Akers sold land near Little River to John Chaffin, her son. In June 1842 Rebecca alone sold land to Joseph Akers, possibly meaning Jonathan died between 1840 and 1842. The latter transaction was witnessed by a Jonathan Akers, who is either Rebecca's husband or a different person. If was also witnessed by James Akers, who married Sarah "Sally" Reed. On 10 Aug 1891 James Akers, a 76 year old widower, son of Jonathan and Rebecca Akers, married Nancy Lefflew.

Notes

Note NI00158A partial list of the names of John Akers's children came from a list reportedly given by Joel O.

Akers and reportly found in a book in the Sutro Branch of the California Library. It includes the.

names of William A., Burwell, Elizabeth, Joel, James Stephen, Fleming and Luke Akers. These names, with the exception of William A. Akers have been verified in a study of the tax lists and.

censuses of Franklin county, Virginia. It is apparent from the study of the tax lists however that William Akers is the son of William Akers son of Blackburn Akers. John is in the 1839 tax list of Franklin county, Virginia, but disappears after that. He probably died in 1839 as his estate.

inventory is recorded that year in Franklin county. He is listed as a pensioner from Franklin county,.

Virginia in 1832. John appears on the tax lists of Buckingham county from 1783 thru 1804 and.

appears on the Franklin county tax lists beginning in 1805. On September 3, 1804 he bought from.

Jacob Wimmer 200 acres on the Blackwater River in Franklin county, Virginia, witnessed by Wm.

Akers, Blackburn Akers, Nathaniel Akers and William Akers. He was stated to be of Buckingham.

county. 1

Some people call him John B. Akers and present day researchers have written that he fought at.

the battle of Bunker Hill and that he was so enthusiastic about the battle that friends called him John.

Bunker Akers. I doubt that anyone from central Virginia fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. It is my.

understanding that this battle was fought by people from the area of Boston, Massachusetts.

Secondly there was a hill in the vicinity of where John Akers moved to in Franklin county, Virginia.

named Bunker Hill that may be found on a map of early Franklin county, Virginia. In my opinion,.

this is the source of bunker in the name that the locals used in speaking of this man in order to.

distinguish him from other John Akers. I think that the "B" was not part of his name, only a way of.

distinguishing him. In the tax records of Buckingham county and the store records of John.

Epperson, he was also distinguished with the designation of SB, meaning son of Blackburn. 1

John Akers drew a pension for his military service in the American Revolution and the pension record shows he enlisted from Buckingham county, Virginia in 1780. He served three months under Captain Anthony Winston of Virginia. In 1781 he served three months under Captain John Caldwell, he then served under serveral officers not named. The pension record also showes he was at the seige of York and the capture of Cornwallis. He applied for a pension on May 8, 1833 while living in Franklin county, Virginia. He was seventy-five years old when he applied for the pension. 1
