Thomas Akers Steward aka Thomas Wood Akers was born on 5 Jun 1836 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England to Thomas Akers and Sarah Steward, who were not yet married.
Thomas' mother Sarah Steward married his father Thomas Akers on 7 Dec 1836.
Thomas Akers Steward, son of Sarah Steward, born 5 Jun 1836, was christened on 23 Jan 1838 at St Philip, Birmingham.[1] His brother Robert Akers, son of Thomas Akers & Sarah, born 13 Dec 1837, was christened on the same day.
In 1841 Thomas Akers (age 5) lived at Summer Row in Handsworth, Staffordshire with his father Thos (36), mother Sarah (24), brother Robert (3), and sister Jane (1).[2]
In 1851 Thomas Akers (age 14) lived at New John Street West in Saint George, Birmingham with his father Thomas (46, Butcher), mother Sarah (35), and five siblings: Robert (13), Jane (10), Alfred (8), Mathew (5), and Ann (2).[3]
In 1861 Thomas Akers (age 24, Butcher) lived at Barr West Street in Birmingham with his father Thomas (56, Butcher), mother Sarah (47), and five siblings: Jane (20), Alfred (19, Wire Drawer), Matthew (14, Silversmith), Ann (12, Scholar), and Harry (5, Scholar).[4]
In 1871 Thomas Acres (age 35, Private) lived in Hougham, Kent.[5]
Thomas Akers (age 38, Bachelor, Private ASC [Army Service Corps], son of Thomas Akers, Butcher, deceased) married Mary Ann Duncan (age 26, Spinster, daughter of Alfred Duncan, Engine Driver) on 2 Jan 1875 at St Mary the Virgin in Chatham, Kent - witnesses were Peter Andrew Duncan & Sarah Brown.[6] The marriage was registered in Medway, Kent in the first quarter of the year.[7]
Thomas and Mary had six children:
Emily Kate (Akers) Tye (1871-1963) [born before they married, she was christened as Emily Kate Duncan]
Thomas Alfred Akers (1874-) [also born before they married, but christened with the surname Acres]
At the time of daughter Maud's birth in 1877, Thomas and his family were living in Ireland - Thomas was a Corporal with the Army Service Corps and they resided at Curragh Camp in County Kildare.
Thomas' family were back in England by 1881.
Unable to locate Thomas for certain on the 1881 census - most of his family lived at Alexander St in Aldershot, Hampshire: wife Maryann (31, Soldier Wife), son Thomas (6, Scholar), and daughter Maud (3, Scholar).[8]
In 1891 Thomas Akers (age 55) lived at Perry Street in Chatham Town, Kent with his wife Maryanne (43) and six children: Kate (19, Tailoress), Thomas A (17, General Labourer), Maud (14, Scholar), Beatrice A (10, Scholar), Mable C F (6, Scholar), and Ethel R (0).[9]
In 1901 Thomas Akers (age 65, Pensioner Army Service Corp) lived in Rochester St Margaret, Kent with his wife Mary A (52) and three daughters: Beatrice (19, Tailoress), Mabel C F (16), and Ethel R (10), as well as his father-in-law Alfred Duncan (81).[10]
Thomas Akers passed away in Aug 1903, aged 63 [~67] years. His death was registered in Medway in the third quarter of the year.[11] Thomas Akers of 39 New Road, was buried at St Peter, Rochester on 27 Aug 1903.[12]
