Biography

William AKERS, IV was born between 1700 and 1710 probably in Essex County, Virginia where his father, William AKERS, III was living. His mother's name was Ann. He probably died between 1790 and 1796 in Buckingham County, Virginia. In the 1796 tax list for Buckingham County, Virginia, his estate is listed.[1]

Birth of William AKERS, IV

Place of Birth: Essex County, Virginia
Reasoning: Since his father, William AKERS, III was listed in the records of Essex County, Virginia around the time of his birth it is most likely that William AKERS, IV was born in Essex County, Virginia.
William AKERS, III was listed as a witness to the wills of John BOUGHAN (2 January 1697) and the will of Alexander DURHAM (8 January 1697) in Essex County, Virginia.
In 1704, William AKERS, III is listed as having 200 acres in Essex County, Virginia[2] This was most likely land he inherited from his father, William AKERS II who died around 1701 or 1702. [Will of William AKERS, II was Written 24 February 1701, proven 10 August 1702]
on 10 April 1706, William ACRES of Essex County, Virginia sold 98 acres of land on the main swamp of Pescataway Creek to James BOUGHAN, Jr. for 2,000 pounds of tobacco.[3]
In September 1734, his father, William AKERS, III, was deceased and his property in Essex County, Virginia was placed under lawsuit.[4] This was because of the terms of the will of William AKERS, II [written 24 Feb 1701, proven 10 August 1702] in which it was stated that the Ann (AKERS) SMITH, the daughter of William AKERS, I, and the sister of William AKERS, III was to be able to live on all the land from his Spring Branch to the land of Richard Jones during her lifetime. Since Ann (AKERS) SMITH was listed as surviving her brother and was alive during the time of the land sale, the sale was voided. Since William AKERS, IV was listed in the dispute, it is thought that he was still in the area of Essex County, Virginia or at least able to travel to the court to be a witness for his aunt.

Residences:

William AKERS, IV was living in Essex County, Virginia as late as 1735, he moved to Amelia County, Virginia where he is found in 1739 and 1740 and then to Goochland County, Virginia in 1746. He then was found in Albemarle County (later Buckingham County), Virginia in 1748 and was there until his death in 1795 or 1796.[3]
In 1735 he is known to have either leased or sold his land in Essex County, Virginia and moved on Deep Creek in Amelia County, Virginia near the Blackburn family whose land was about 10 miles away in Goochland County, Virginia.[3]
On 3 May 1735, William ACRES sold 100 acres of land to Charles BURNETT for 20 Pounds and 2000 Pounds of Tobacco.[5]
1739 - Listing of William Acors in Deep Creek, Amelia County, Virginia.[6]
1746 - William AKERS listed on Tithe List of Southam Parish of Goochland County, Virginia along with a household containing William, John and Lambert BLACKBURN and John MOSSUM.[3]
1764 - William AKERS, Sr. [actually IV] listed in the tax list of Buckingham County, Virginia.[3]
1788 - William AKERS, IV listed in the tax list of Buckingham County, Virginia as Exempt, but having 4 horses.[3]
1796 - In the personal property list in Buckingham County, Virginia, William AKERS, IV's estate is listed [with 2 horses] and in 1797, his wife, Susannah AKERS appears, probably as his widow.[3]
Susannah AKERS is last seen on the personal property tax list of Buckingham County, Virginia in 1801.[3]

Marriage:

William AKERS, IV met and married his wife, Susannah BLACKBURN prior to 1730 when their first known child was estimated to have been born. This probably occurred around Essex County, Virginia where he was living at the time.

Spouse:

Susannah BLACKBURN is believed to have died sometime after 1800 when she was listed in the personal property tax list in Buckingham County, Virginia.

Children of William AKERS, IV and Susannah BLACKBURN:

  1. Blackburn AKERS (Born: About 1729 / 30 in Essex County, Virginia; Died: about 1799 possibly in Montgomery County, Virginia); Married: Elizabeth who was probably the daughter of John BLACKBURN
  2. William E. AKERS (Born: About 1730 in Essex County, Virginia; Died: 1832 - 1834); Married: Mary "Polly" BLACKBURN
  3. John AKERS (Born: probably in 1740's in what is now Powhatan County, Virginia); married before 7 May 1771, but wife's name is unknown. Virginia Baptist register notation "Buckingham Co, May 7, 1771, baptized John Akers and wife".
