Jason C Akins [1]
Jason was born December 22, 1841 in Pickens, SC [2] He was the son of Abraham Littleton Akins (1803 - 1899) and his wife Nancy Jane Chastain (1807 - 1900) [1]
Jason Akins' maternal ancestry is (1) Nancy Jane Chastain (2) John (3) John (4) Pierre (5) Pierre (6) Estienne (7) Jacques (8) Estienne Chastain. [2]
At some point in his life, probably prior to 1862, Jason moved from South Carolina, where he was born, to Georgia, where he is buried. Information on when this took place has not yet been identified. His father also was born in South Carolina and died in Gilmer County, Georgia in 1899. Jason's records in Georgia begin with his wartime service in 1862, so all subsequent activity can be assumed for Georgia.
Gilmer County, Georgia was formed from Cherokee County in 1832. The County Seat is Ellijay.
Jasen Akin served in the 39th Infantry, Confederate States Army, in 1862. [3]
"The Georgia 39th Infantry Regiment, organized at Dalton, Georgia, in April, 1862, recruited its members in the counties of Butts, Whitfield, Bartow, Dade, Fayette, Clayton, and Chattahoochee. The unit was ordered to Tennessee, then Mississippi where it was brigaded under T.H. Taylor in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. After fighting at Champion's Hill, it was captured on July 4, 1863, at Vicksburg. Exchanged and assigned to General Cummings' Brigade, the 39th went on to participate in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chattanooga to Nashville and in 1865 saw action at Bentonville. It reported 52 casualties at Chattanooga and in December, 1863, totalled 243 men and 202 arms. During January, 1865, the regiment had 177 fit for duty and surrendered in April." [4]
Jason was most likely in Company G Gilmer Lions Gilmer County [4]
Jason first married Edith Elizabeth Clayton, who was born September 05, 1845, and died May 21, 1909.[2] Find a Grave gives her name as Judith Edith Clayton (1845 - 1909) [1]
