Notes for Obediah Albee:
Obediah Albee was a blacksmith by trade. In 1732 he and his family moved from Mendon to Holliston. While in Holliston a notice was circulated in an appeal for 40 families to settle an area name Wiscasset Point in eastern Mass. Wiscasset Point, i.e., Westport Island, was land that was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony of Plymouth. This Land was purchased by the Wiscasset Company from the Colony of Plymouth. Each family received a strip of land running the width of the island of approximately 100 acres from the bay to the Sheepscot River. The terms of the appeal was that each family was to clear 1 acre of land per year for 7 years and build a permanent home on the island. Obediah Albee signed the contract in 1736 and moved to Wiscasset in 1741. The title of land on Westport Island was named Jeremy Swam, lot #9. In 1749 Obediah, along with his son Obediah, Jr., signed the petition for making Wiscasset a town. On May 13, 1752, Obediah sold his 100 acres of Westport Island property to Richard Sawyer for 50 pounds currency. He later built a house on the hill near what is now the junction of US Route 1 and ME Route 27.[2]
