“In the late 1840s, Robert Kleberg, Chief Justice and operator of a general store in Clinton, the County Seat of DeWitt County asked a ship captain to bring a “strong German boy” to work for him. A young man named Frederich Albrecht was selected.
“Frederich was born March 25, 1824 in Schmalsfeld, Grafenschaft, Wernegerude, am Harz, Prussia. He left Germany in 1848, landed at Indianola, then made his way to Clinton by hitching a ride on a freight wagon. He worked for the Kleberg family for twenty years, even while serving in various home guard units in the area during the war.
“On April 9, 1853, Frederich and Louisa F. Harsdorf were married by their friend, Chief Justice Robert Kleberg in the log structure which was the first courthouse of DeWitt County. She had emigrated to Texas November 30, 1850 with her family, the Frerich Harsdorfs, who settled in the Meyersville area. In 1854, the couple became members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Meyersville, where he hauled rocks for the new church.
“As Frederich had money available, he sent for his six brothers and parents. The brothers Andreas, Christoph, Ludwig, August, A. Christian and William and the parents, Ludwig and Karolina, came. A sister Sophia, did not come. The parents lived only a short time after coming to Texas. Andreas and Christoph were the last to come over because they had families. Andreas had three sons and Christoph one son.
“The Frederich Albrechts had fifteen children...
“July 28th, 1856, at the courthouse in Clinton, Frederich became a U.S. citizen.
“During the Civil War, he served with various home guard units, serving under Captains Robert Kleberg, Jacob Schiwetz and Martin Martindale. Captain Kleberg outfitted him with horse, saddle and sidearms. During the INdian uprising, he served six months in the Texas Mounted Volunteers that soon became the Texas Rangers.
“In 1868 he moved to Goliad County and bought 320 acres of land for 0. He farmed, raised cattle and sheep. From time to time, he bought additional acreage.”
