Disputed Identity

Name as Barber has been disproven; it has been removed. (Brown-44556)

Biography

Elizabeth Aldous,[1] the daughter of James Aldous and his wife Elizabeth. (It has been proposed by Elizabeth French Bartlett that the mother's maiden name was Barber. She said that she had found a marriage record for James Aldous to Elizabeth Barber, but no one has been able to find a record of this marriage or any other the evidence to support this marriage.)[2][3][4][5][6][7] Elizabeth was baptized at Stradbroke, Suffolk, England, on 6 Jan 1593/4.[2][1][8]

Henry Brock and Elizabeth Aldous were married about 1619,[2] but no record of this marriage has been found. It was probably at Stradbrooke, Suffolk, England[1][9][10] Torrey gives the name of Henry's wife as "Elizabeth [Barber]."[11] Later research by Myrtle Stevens Hyde has shown this to be incorrect.[2]

Peter Wilson Coldham states that Elizabeth Brock came to Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1647,[12][13][14] however there is evidence that Elizabeth and Henry were in New England by 1640, settling in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Dedham records for the 28th of the 6th month (August) 1638 shows the following transaction: Elizabeth's husband "Henry Brocke enterteyned to purchase Joseph Shawe his Lott & crtifficate pduced accordingly"[15]

In 1640, "--- the wife of good-man Brocke was received wth good satisfaction unto ye church ye 29th of ye 1st month."[16]

The records of the First Church of Dedham show that Elizabeth Brock (daughter of Elizabeth and Henry) was admitted to the church on the 27th day, 8th month, 1643.[16]

Elizabeth died during 1652 at Dedham, and certainly before 19 Oct 1652.

"Elizabeth Brock, deceased the -- of the -- mo." [1652][17][18][19]

Her FindAGrave memorial states that she died on 19 Oct 1652 at Dedham and was buried in an unmarked grave at the Old Village Cemetery, Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[8] Unfortunately, there is no citation for either the date for the fact of her burial at the Old Village Cemetery. The date given, 19 Oct 1652, cannot be correct, as it is the exact date on which her husband Henry's Will was proved. She was mentioned in the Will Henry wrote in 1646, but she was deceased by the time Henry's Will was proved on 19 Oct 1652.[20]

Children

Henry and Elizabeth had children:[21]

  1. John Brock, b 1620; m Sarah (Symmes) Haugh
  2. Elizabeth Brock; m 31 8th month (Oct) 1644 Robert Gowing.
  3. Ann Brock; m 28 3rd month (May) 1655 James Vales

Others mentioned in the Dedham Vital Records:

This profile has 20 footnotes but half of them (1, 3-10, 19) are citations to sources deemed unreliable for pre-1700 profiles (unsourced pedigree files, Yates index, Millenium file, unsourced Find a Grave memorial, etc.), & in most cases they are just generic citations to the entire databases anyway. 18 is also a generic citation to an entire database. Footnotes 13 & 14 are duplicate citations to the Ancestry.com index of Coldham's book, which is cited in footnote 12, so those three footnotes are really just one. I think it would improve the profile if these unreliable and duplicated sources were removed so it will be easier to follow what factual claims are actually supported by reliable sources and where the gaps remain.

Hello Project Members

Could you please consider removing the mother Unknown-651879 from this profile as I am fairly certain that she is a sibling rather than mother. Please see note on previous comment. Thankyou.

This Elizabeth (Aldous) Brock and her sister of Grace (Aldous) Tyler were both the daughters of John Aldous & Elizabeth (Unknown). The lineage is confusing because Grace did marry first another James Aldous before marrying John Tyler, but these are two different men both named James Aldous. The lineage is explained in the article by Myrtle Stevens Hyde cited in footnote 2 of the profile.

I just read the will of Grace Tyler wife of John Tyler and wife of deceased first husband James Aldous : Does this discount the children against this profile being in fact siblings to Grace first wife of James Aldous not children? <ref>Gleanings of page 720 (accessed 13 Aug 2023) </ref>The Will of Grace (Aldus) Tyler, sayweaver; Testator: Now Wife of John Tyler of Colchester, Essex, England.  ; Will dated 24 May 1647 and Probate recorded 19 Jul 1647. It may not have been clear from my reply to your later comment, but the children of this Elizabeth (Aldous) Brock & Henry Brock are also identified in the Hyde article at p. 133. Henry names John, Mary, Elizabeth & Ann in his will. However, Hyde states that daughter Mary, bp. 23 Apr 1622, probably died young and she is not mentioned in the will. This does raise a question whether Mary (Brock) Phillips (1618-1640) is currectly attached as that Mary. There is no source cited for the connection in her profile. I'll post a comment on that profile too - she may be a different Mary Brock.

I disagree with Aldous. And I'll state several sources point to Barber. But one source confirms (to me) that Barber is the correct name.

In Pioneers of Massachusetts it is listed on page 31 that Richard Barber, Dedham, propr. 23, Nov. 1638. Adm. chh. (5) 1639; farm. May 13, 1640. Richard died April 18, 1644. His inventory taken May 15, 1644, will probated May 21, 1646. No family mentioned in the will. Henry Brock and his son John B. execs. (Reg. 111, 178.

Same Pioneers of Mass. On page 70 State that Richard calls Henry Brock, son-in-law.

Henry, Dedham, Propr. 1638, adm Chb. 24 (10) 1641. Res. in Boston in 1639 (L) Wife Elizabeth adm. chb. 29 (1) 1640; ch. John adm. chh. 3 (2) 1640. Mary Brock m. 5 (1) 1639, Henry Philips; Elizabeth Brock, adm. chh. 27 (8) 1643, m. 31 (8) 1644, Robert Gowing. Henry d. in 1652. Will prob. Oct. 18, 1652: Beq. to wife Elizabeth and ch. John, Elizabeth and Anne. (Reg. IV, 288) Richard Barber calls him Son-in-Law.

the truth is no one knows where Henry and Elizabeth Barber came from. no proof of Stradbroke. For well over 100 years there has been searches where the Brock's and Fales came from have come to nothing.

In Pioneers of Massachusetts, on page 31, the reference to "Register 111, 178" should instead be to Register Volume 3, page 178, dated "13 (4) 46" on which Richard Barber's will appears. It doesn't list any family members. Its final sentence reads "To my beloved friends & brethren in Christ, Henry Brock and his sonne John Brock, my executors". Perhaps Pope misread that to be that Henry was his son-in-law, but Richard's will does not say that. Richard bequeathed all of his estate to the poor of Dedham, and to his executors.

J,

I'm a little confused. Barber is the correct name of who? If you mean to say that the wife of Henry Brock should be Elizabeth Barber instead of Elizabeth Aldous as we have it here, I would disagree and say her name and origins have been proved.

- Henry and Elizabeth Brock had children John, (Mary), Elizabeth and Ann baptized in Stradbroke; this exactly matches the known children of Henry and Elizabeth Brock in New England.
- The will of Elizabeth's sister Grace (Aldous) Tyler who m1. James Aldous and m2. John Tyler names "my sister Elizabeth Brock of Dedham in New England" as will as her children John, Elizabeth and Ann.
- The will of Elizabeth's sister Ann (Aldous) Uttinge names Elizabeth Brock, wife of Henry Brock.
