Biography

In his will of 3 September 1842, James Alexander mentions his son Leander, bequeathing him 20 acres of land. Leander is mentioned in the NC census records. In the 1850 census his children are listed as Clarissa, James, Thomas, Rufus, William, John, Allen, Mary, Louisa and "Maryon." (RHT)

An article written about the Elk Shoal ARP church states he and his wife, Jane, were charter members of the "Elk Shoal ARP" and James was an elder. The church was founded in 1875. Another article (Find A Grave) states they gave land for the County Line School, which was near the border of Alexander and Iredell counties, and Leander taught at the Elk Shoal Academy. (RHT)

Leander served for a time in the Civil War. He given a medical discharge on 6 February 1861 for a "disability." (RHT)

The newspaper obituary for Leander reads: Mr. Leander Alexander, of Alexander County, died Saturday June 3d, and was buried Sabbath evening at Union church ground, given years ago by David Alexander for a grave yard. The deceased was 83 years 8 months and 13 days old, and was a ruling elder in Elk Shoal Associate Reformed church. (RHT)

In his 11 January 1881 will (Alexander County), Leander mentions his wife Jane; sons John, Rufus, and Allen; grandson John; and daughters Mary M. and Eliza. He is buried in the Old Union Burying Ground at Stony Point, Alexander County, NC. (RHT)

James was born in 1799. He passed away in 1882.
