Biography

“ William Alexander, one of the sons of Archibald Alexander of Ballybigglemore, in the parish of Taghboyne, county Donegal, (descended from the House of MacAlexander of Tarbert in Kintyre) occupied a holding on the estate of manor Cunninghame, in Taghboyne parish.

He had four sons, Archibald, William Robert and Peter. Peter the youngest son, settled at Londonderry ; he was twice married with issue.

Sometime after his death his second wife, Jane Scott, emigrated to Kentucky with several children who there settled.

William the second son of William, grandson of Archibald of Ballybiglemore, immigrated to Philadelphia and there settled. He died without issue.

Robert the third son, emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1736 where he became a teacher of mathematics; he afterwards settled in Virginia.

Archibald, eldest son of William Alexander was born at Cunningham Manor on 4 Feb 1708. In 1736 he accompanied his brother Robert to America, settling in New Providence, in Pennsylvania. About 1747 he removed to Rockbridge in Virginia. He married twice, with 2 sons, 5 daughters by first wife and 4 sons 3 daughters by second wife.[1]

Research Notes

Appalachian Aristocracy makes the following comment: "Some researchers have his place of death as Augusta Co. VA, but there are no records to confirm this. Secondary sources about his children make no mention of his immigrating with them to the colonies. So it is more likely he died in [Ulster,] Ireland."[2]
