After six Years of living on the Pennsylvania frontier, Hezekiah and Mary Alexander returned to Cecil County, Maryland. On 23 of November 1756 Mary gave birth to their second son, James Rankin Alexander. Named for Hezekiah's Father, James Alexander and Mary's Mother, Esther Rankin.[1][2][3] Hezekiah and Mary left Pennsylvania none too soon, for that November "near Conococheague a party of Indians barbarously mangled a number of inhabitants and took many women and children captive.
Things were peaceful for nearly 20 years when the Revolutionary War commenced and James enlisted. He was a sergeant in the beginning of the war but returned to school and and completed his study of medicine, becoming a doctor, and later a surgeon, working in the Waxhaw Settlements, South Carolina, and in Charlotte, NC. In 1780 he was appointed Surgeon in Colonel William L. Davidson's North Carolina regiment, until sometime in 1781.[4][5][6]
He married Dorcas Garrison on 26 Nov 1789.[7] After 1800, he moved his family to Kentucky.[3][6]
James passed away in 1836 and is buried in Allen County, Kentucky.[8]
