Biography

James Alexander is a member of Clan MacAlister.

Reverend James Alexander (1634-1669) Church of Scotland (Presbyterian)

James Alexander, son of Robert Alexander of Robert Alexander of Blackhouse and Marion (Hamilton) Alexander, , was born in the year 1634 in Boghall, Stirling, Scotland. His stepmother was Janet (Henderson) Alexander.

James married Mary Maxwell, daughter of John and Elizabeth Maxwell.

James was ordained in 1655.

There was a minister named Rev. James Alexander of Boghall (1634-1669) who lived in Ayrshire County, Scotland. He married a lady named Mary Maxwell (Abt 1636-1701), and they had two sons and four daughters.

The family trace their ancestry back to one John Alexander who was a tenant of Paisley Abbey in 1472, but the first to be unambiguously of gentry status was Robert Alexander (b. 1604), a baillie of Paisley who acquired lands at Blackhouse and Boghall in Ayrshire and at Newton in Renfrewshire. Boghall and Blackhouse passed to the descendants of his eldest son, Rev. James Alexander (1634-69), a Presbyterian minister who was deprived of his benefice at Kilmacolm in 1662 for nonconformity, and were later sold. Robert’s second son, Claud Alexander (1645-1703) inherited Newton and seems to have built a mansion house there in the late 17th century. He too was a zealous Presbyterian and was for a time imprisoned at Edinburgh, before being released in 1686 on giving a bond for his future conformity.

Notes

James Alexander, designed "of Boghall," eldest son of Robert Alexander of Blackhouse, was born in 1634.

He entered the University of Glasgow, where he graduated in 1653.

Obtaining license as a probationer in 1655, he was the same year ordained minister of Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire.

For his adherence to the Presbyterian polity, he was deprived by Act of Parliament, 11th June, and of the Privy Council, 1st October 1662.

Accused of preaching and baptizing irregularly, he was summoned to Ayr in March 1669; he died of fever in the same year about the age of thirty-four (Fasti Eccl. Scot., vol. ii., p. 250).

He married Mary, daughter of John Maxwell of Southbar, descended from Adam Maxwell, fifth son of the first Lord Maxwell of Caerlaverock, by Elizabeth, daughter of William Cuninghame of craigends; she died in 1670. By her he had a son, John, and four daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Jean, and Anna. His daughter Jean was, in September 1689, married to William Greenless, one of the magistrates of Paisley (Reg. Abbey Parish of Paisley).
