Connell Alexander born 6 Jun 1879,[1] the fifth son of Joseph Alexander, farmer of Imlick, Carrigans, Co.Donegal, and Frances Mary Long.
A descendent of John Alexander of Menstrie near Stirling, Scotland who with many other Scots emigrated to Northern Ireland in 1613.
Conel was a civil engineer from Queen's College Belfast followed by M.Sc. at Birmingham University where his thesis won for him the gold medal of the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1905.
In 1906 at the age of 27 he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering at Queen's College Cork where he remained until his early death on 20 December 1920. He died of bronchopneumonia probably aggravated by research into poisonous gases during the war. He was president of the Irish Rugby Football Union in 1909-1910 and in 1912 won the Munster Cup medal with his club at Cork.
