Elizabeth (unknown) wife of Andrew Monroe, George Horner and Edward Mountjoy[1]
According to geni.com, her parents were John Alexander and Catherine Graham.
Nothing is known of Elizabeth's early life. Since colonial marriages often took place early and if it is presumed she was married by 1652 and married when she was 17, her birth year could be estimated as, say, 1635.
Mike Marshall estimates her birth as 1636 in England.[2]
However, her third husband Edward Mountjoy was born about 1664. Did he marry a widow nearly 30 years older than he was? Perhaps he did, or perhaps Elizabeth was born much later. Perhaps she was a later wife of Andrew Monroe and not the mother of his children. There appears to be no specific evidence that she was the mother of the children of Andrew Monroe.
Her parents are unknown. Gary Roberts, author of "Ancestors of American Presidents," reports her Elizabeth, "sometimes called Alexander".[3] Mike Marshall's Colonial Virginia site which is generally reliable, gives her father as John Alexander, born about 1603 in England, and died 5 October 1677 in Stafford County, Virginia [2] but acknowledges this is unproven. Marshall gives Elizabeth's mother as Catherine Graham, born before 1620 in Gartmore, Scotland and d. Bef 1663, Stafford County, Virginia. If Elizabeth was born into this family around 1636, she would have been the eldest child, but there is no reason to believe this family had a daughter Elizabeth.
One difficulty with placing her in a John Alexander family is that there was more than one such family in Virginia at this time.
Her birth place is unknown. If she was born into the John Alexander family she might have been born in Virginia or in England. The Alexanders, however, tend to be a Scottish rather than English family, and Elizabeth married a Scotsman.
Gary Roberts, author of "Ancestors of American Presidents," reports that by 1652, Andrew Monroe, ancestor of President James Monroe, had married Elizabeth, "sometimes called Alexander". [3]
Andrew had been born in Scotland and, having come to St. Marys County, Maryland by 1642, he was of Westmoreland Co, Virginia, by 1650. [3]
The Andrew Monroe who was an immigrant in St. Mary's County, Maryland (1642-1647) and later of Westmoreland County, Virginia, was not the Major Andrew Munro, second son of David Munro of Katewell and Agnes Munro of Durness, and rector of St. Luke's Church, Newport Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia, who died intestate in 1719. [4]
Andrew Monroe died in 1668[1][3][5], or before 1668[6], and was buried at Doctor's Point, Westmoreland, County.[7]
The date of the marriage of Elizabeth to Andrew Monroe is unknown.
Elizabeth married secondly, George Horner.[1][3] Her second marriage occurred before July 30, 1679.[8]
30 July 1679: The estate of Andrew Monroe as devided amongst the children, that in case of the mortality of either of the children, his estate ought desend to the surviveing children in equall shares, and Bunch Roe who married Eliz one of the surviveing Children of Andrew Monroe, Sergeant, and Bunch Roe...did arrest Geo: Horner who married the relict and administratrix of Andrew Monroe for his part of Geo: Monroe one of the children's estate, he being deceased, the Court doth order that Horner Make payment to Bunch Roe of his equall part of Geo. Monroe's estate.[9]
Elizabeth married thirdly, Edward Mountjoy, the marriage taking place before February 23, 1686-7.[1][3][10][11]
20 Feb 1693: "Know all men by these presents that I Edward Mountjoy and Elizabeth my wife of the county of Stafford, doe for the consideration of 1300 pounds of good tobacco in casks to be paid yearly, and every year, during my said wife's natural life by Andrew Monroe of the County of Westmoreland and his heirs doe bargain, alien and sell all my right and title of Dower and thirds, of all Lands & Tenements, houses, orchards, mines or minerals whatsoever, which did belong or now doth belong to me the said Edward Mountjoy and Elizabeth my wife, as her right of Dower and thirds of Lands as aforesaid, and Law, custom or usage to the contrary notwithstanding as Witness our hands and seals this 20 day of February 1693. Edward Mountjoy (Seal), Elizabeth Mountjoy (Seal). Witness: Bunch Roe, Rodger Humphries".[11] [Cited Westmoreland Wills & Deeds, No. 2, 1691-1699, p. 71]. King[10] described this transaction as Edward Mountjoy and Elizabeth, his wife, of Stafford County, deeded to her son Andrew Monroe, all her dower interest in the Westmoreland estate of her deceased husband. However, he may have made an assumption that Andrew Monroe was her son, the transcript of the deed does not state that Andrew Monroe was her son.
On "03 Sept 1705 he [Edward Mountjoy] sold with Elizabeth his wife 330 acres of land to Thomas James, for 16,000 pounds of tobacco, being part of the land he had obtained from Henry Thompson on Potomack Run 05 Jan 1689".[10][11] [Cited Stafford County Will Book, Lieber Z., 1699-1709, p. 286].
13 Feb 1705/1706: Captain Henry Coniers (Conyers) bought the Water Mill at the head of Potomack Creek for 6,000 pounds of tobacco . On this occasion Elizabeth Mountjoy acknowledged her dower. Previously she had named Henry Conyers her lawful attorney for the release to Thomas James 03 Sept 1705.[11] [Cited Stafford County Will Book, Lieber Z., 1699-1709, p. 307].
13 Jan 1708/1709: The last entry in the Stafford Liber Z in which Edward Mountjoy figured. He assigned some land to William Barber. "As Elizabeth Mountjoy his wife does not release her dower, there is reason to suppose that she had died before that date."[11] [Cited Stafford County Will Book, Lieber Z., 1699-1709, p. 436].
In the early 1700s Edward Mountjoy and his wife were based in Stafford County and hence it is presumed that both died in Stafford County, Elizabeth around 1707 and Edward Mountjoy around 1712. A deed of 1723 referenced the will of an Edward Mountjoy of Stafford County in 1712.[10][12]
As the date of the marriage of Elizabeth to Andrew Monroe is uncertain (although it is presumed to be c 1652) it is unclear which, if any, of the children of Andrew Monroe are also the children of Elizabeth.
Elizabeth and her first husband Andrew Monroe had six children [no source for this]. Their household also included George Monroe, Andrew's child by his first unnamed marriage. He must have died early because Elizabeth and Andrew also had a child named George -- and he also died early.
Her second husband George Horner had a son from a previous marriage. It is presumed that Elizabeth did not have any children with George Horner or Edward Mountjoy.
