William Francis Oats was born in about 1859. He was the son of illegitimate son of William Alexander and Elizabeth Oats.
He married Elizabeth Sarah Phillips in 1881. They had five children:
William was a storekeeper and later established a coach service from the rail head at Little River to Akaroa, which ended with an accident in which he suffered severe head injuries after a horse kicked him in the head. He was affected quite badly by this incident and was periodically confined to mental hospitals thereafter. His wife, four sons and baby daughter moved to Christchurch.
In the Kaiapoi Electoral Rolls of 1905-06 William Francis Oates Alexander was recorded at the Temperance Hotel in High Street, Kaiapoi, along with his son Thomas. He was a Hotel Assistant.
His wife Elizabeth died in 1910.
In 1911 he was recorded at Sea View Road, New Brighton, working as a Labourer.
His son John died in 1921 at the age of 37.
In the 1922 New Zealand, Electoral Rolls (1853-1981) William Francis Oates Alexander was living at Kairaki, Kaiapoi, Canterbury, employed as a Carrier.
William was retired when he passed away on 4 August 1928 at the age of 70 and was buried on Tuesday, 7 August 1928 at Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand[1][2]. Block number: 17, Plot number: 83
