Biography

William Francis Oats was born in about 1859. He was the son of illegitimate son of William Alexander and Elizabeth Oats.

He married Elizabeth Sarah Phillips in 1881. They had five children:

  1. William Frederick Alexander (b. 20 Jul 1882, d. 14 Aug 1957)
  2. John Miller Alexander (b. 1884, d. 16 Nov 1921)

  4. Philip Henry Alexander (b. 1886, d. 1965)
  5. Amy Belle Alexander (b. 1889, d. 1969)

William was a storekeeper and later established a coach service from the rail head at Little River to Akaroa, which ended with an accident in which he suffered severe head injuries after a horse kicked him in the head. He was affected quite badly by this incident and was periodically confined to mental hospitals thereafter. His wife, four sons and baby daughter moved to Christchurch.

His wife Elizabeth died in 1910.

In 1911 he was recorded at Sea View Road, New Brighton, working as a Labourer.

His son John died in 1921 at the age of 37.
