Biography

1635 Birth and Parents

George Norbury Mackenzie shows George Alexander of Northfield and Northampton, Massachusets, to have been born in Scotland, date unknown, the brother of John and Thomas, and son of a John Alexander, born in Scotland circa 1615, who came to Massachusetts prior to 1644 and later settled at Windsor in the Connecticut Valley. [1]

Since George's father John is presented with a birth year of 1615, it is unlikely he had a son until he was aged 20 in 1635. Therefore estimate George's birth as 1635, which would make him a boy of 8 at his arrival in Massachusetts in 1643, and aged 68 at his death in 1703.

1643 Arrival in Massachusetts

George Alexander arrived in Massachusetts ca. 1643.[2]

1644 Marriage to Susanna Sage

George Alexander married Su[sannah] Sage in Windsor, Connecticut, on 18 March 1643/4. She died 5 May 1684. [1]

1654 Northampton

Northampton, Massachusetts, was settled in 1654, and George Alexander, the father of Mary, was one of the original proprietors.

1703 Death

George Alexander died 5 May 1703 in Northfield, Massachusetts.[3][4]

There is a surmise that George MAY have been the child of a John Alexander, because he named a son John. That is an appropriate comment to add under Research Notes, but it is not enough to justify connecting George to any possible father named John Alexander until further reliable sourcing is discovered. I am going to disconnect George from this John Alexander father, because it is confusing efforts to merge several duplicate John Alexanders.

Agree, I can find no mention of his father in records to date. Agree that conjectures about father should be in research notes.

Connie, it appears that the profile John Alexander-437 was created to be the father of George, and we now have a source for the connection, albeit one that is not up to today's standards. I don't believe Alexander-437 should be merged with ANY other John, and have stripped out information that had been added and changed to Alexander-437 from its original posting. There are numerous other John Alexanders, however, that DO need to be merged, many of which are noted in the Disambiguation on John's profile.

Footnote number 5, the Colonial Families book of 1917 shows John Alexander as George’s father. The geographic link appears to Windsor, Connecticut.

I suppose the disconnect has to stay since there is no sizzling documentation, maybe more looking can be inspired!

Thanks for calling attention to Mackenzie's Colonial Families book, which I've located on the internet and now included a full linked citation. The good news is that Mackenzie refers to John Alexander of Scotland as George's father. The bad news is that, while Mackenzie was highly regarded in his day -- the book is 100 years old -- he did not cite his sources. So his material needs to be confirmed by other, more "sizzling" sources, but it's a better start than we had before.

From what I can gather, the original intent of the profile of John that had been linked was that it be the profile for George's father. Someone had added specific places in Scotland, for which I see no source, and a death date from another John Alexander who migrated to Virginia, so I've stripped this information out of that John profile. Since the original purpose of that John profile was to be the father of George, I think the citation from Mackenzie is enough to justify re-linking it. Stripping out the fake information that had been added to it then gives clarity to what it might be merged with, and what not.
