Revolutionary War Service

With the approach of the Revolution, both of the Alexander brothers (Hezekiah and John McKnitt) became increasingly involved in the events which would culminate in independence from Great Britain. In 1775 both men were members of the Mecklenburg County Committee of Safety. On August 21, 1775, Hezekiah was appointed by the Provincial Congress meeting in Hillsborough to the Salisbury District Committee of Safety which was to serve as the local governing body for a multi-county area. In November, 1776, Hezekiah joined other state delegates at Halifax to form the Fifth Provincial Congress which was charged with the task of writing the first state constitution. After the Halifax Congress, Hezekiah joined the Fourth Regiment of North Carolina Troops as Paymaster.[1]

DAR PATRIOT OF THE REVOLUTION

Service: NORTH CAROLINA [2] Rank(s): PATRIOTIC SERVICE Service Source: GROOME, MECKLENBURG IN THE REV, 1740-1783, P 29; SAUNDERS, COL RECS OF NC, VOL 10, PP 619, 914 Service Description: 1) SIGNER OF MECKLENBURG DEC OF INDEPENDENCE, 2) MEMBER, PROV CONGRESS AND COUNCIL OF SAFETY

Slavery

Enslaved People in the Alexander Household[3] Based on the same information used for the timeline, this section is organized by personal name rather than date. Keep in mind that there were probably other enslaved people here whose names are unknown because they either died or were sold before Hezekiah wrote his will. Abram: A “Negro man.” Hezekiah bequeathed Abram to Mary Sample Alexander in his 1796 will. Ann: A “Negro girl.” In his will, Hezekiah left Ann to his son Silas. Bet, A “Negro woman” Hezekiah Alexander left to his wife, who in turn left Bet to their son Joel when she made out her will in 1803. We know that Bet was of child-bearing age around the turn of the century because Mary’s will specifically mention Bet’s child Fanny/Jenny (accounts and spellings vary), born on Sept. 5, 1799. Mary left Fanny/Jenny to Keziah. Fanny or Jenny: Fanny/Jenny was Bet’s daughter, and was described in Mary Alexander’s will as having been born on Sept. 5, 1799. Mary left the child Fanny/Jenny to her daughter Keziah. Frank, son of Jean, was born into slavery. In the 1796 will of Hezekiah Alexander, he left Jean, Frank, and Frank’s siblings, Siah and Nancy, to his daughter Esther Garrison.

Freemasonry

Hezekiah was reportedly a Freemason. One can see supposed Freemason symbols carved above the windows and doors of the Hezekiah Alexander House in Charlotte, NC and Freemason news publications allude to the Alexander House doubling as a lodge meeting hall upon its completion in 1774.

Research Notes

Birth was January 13, 1722 is now January 13,1721 (likely a census rounding error) and death date was July 16,1801 now January 10,1801 (likely transcription error) Conflicting death information in a merge 2/2023:

  • Died 10 Jan 1801 at age 79 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, United States
  • Died 16 Jul 1801 at age 80 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, United States

To Sally Smith:

Just want to recognize the beautiful wordsmithing you did on the distinction between Hezekiah Alexander and Hezekiah South. It was succinct, to the point, easily understood. Thank you for that contribution.

Would one of the managers of this profile please delete the name "South".

The name "South" should be removed. There is no documentation that supports this name as his middle name or nickname. The Mecklenburg Genealogical Society confirms that he was never known as South.

There is a note on FamilySearch, GMG7-VR3, that explains the probable source of this error. "The notion that Hezekiah's middle name was "South" has been erroneously perpetuated in many entries for him. As proof, I offer the will of James Robert Alexander which states: " I hereby appoint and constitute my TWO sons, Amos Alexander(no middle name) and Josiah Alexander (no middle name) and (meaning "as well as") Hezekiah South as my only and sole executors of this my last will and testament....." "Hezekiah South" was a surveyor in Cecil County, and a DAR proven Patriot: SOUTH, HEZEKIAH Ancestor #: A216160 Service: MARYLAND Rank(s): CIVIL SERVICE, PATRIOTIC SERVICE, CAPTAIN Birth: ANTE 1740 Death: ANTE 4-8-1793 CECIL CO MARYLAND. https://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A216160. This should help other Alexander researchers who have wondered why this "middle name" appeared. Sally S. Smith Pensacola"

FINALLY, SOMEONE HAS EXPLAINED THE NAME, "SOUTH" FOR HEZEKIAH ALEXANDER. LIVING IN CHARLOTTE, MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA , I HAVE VISITED THE CHARLOTTE HISTORICAL MUSEUM (HEZEKIAH MUSEUM} OVER THE PAST SIXTY OR SO YEARS AFTER MY LATE GRANDFATHER AND GRANDMOTHER INFORMED ME YEARS AGO THAT MY GRANDFATHER'S MOTHER WAS LENOIR ALEXANDER. I HAVE NEVER FOUND THE NAME "SOUTH" AS IT REFERS TO ANY ALEXANDER. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INFO: JAMES BERRY

Thank you James. Actually Sally Smith the contributor on FamilySearch did the hard work and posted the explanation.

Alexander-22740 and Alexander-2274 are not ready to be merged because: Middle name South should be removed. No documentation to reflect his middle name as South I found the error came from a signee on his 1796 will Hezekiah South.

Alexander-22740 and Alexander-2274 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same wife, same birth date

Alexander-8150 and Alexander-2274 appear to represent the same person because: I believe this was missed due to a misspelling of the first name and a mistake on the birth yr. The correct spelling is Hezekiah and correct yr is 1927. Same middle name, birthplace, death date, wife and children. 8150's own source confirmed they misspelt the name. The year mixup is common and represented in multiple conflicting sources. I lean towards 1927 because it's closer to the date listed by the Charlotte Museum of History: rlottemuseum.org/about/hezekiah-alexander-homesite/

Alexander-2274 and Alexander-11914 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same kid listed (Amos).

Alexander-10781 and Alexander-2274 appear to represent the same person because: Same birthplace, same birthdate (different yr). 2274 is closer to correct based on The Charlotte Museum of History's timeline where the Hezekiah Alexander House is located. Same death place, same year (different date). 10781 is correct based on the timeline from the Charlotte Museum of History. http://charlottemuseum.org/about/hezekiah-alexander-homesite/
