Biography

Robert Alexander (1767–1841), a Scottish immigrant, came to Virginia from Scotland in 1786. Around 1790 he purchased the Mercer estate in Kentucky. Under the guidance of his son, Robert A. Alexander, during the 19th century, Woodburn Stud became the birthplace of Kentucky's Thoroughbred industry.

Although born a British subject, Robert Alexander, Robert Altcheson Alexander's father, became an American citizen in 1791 and while still in Virginia obtained, "sight unseen," the original land grant in Kentucky that would later become Woodburn Farm. He purchased the land from the estate of General Hugh Mercer, a hero of the French and indian War, who had been given this property through a military land grant. Robert met and married Eliza Richardson Wetslger of Frankfort and from this marriage came four children: Robert Altcheson, Alexander John, Mary Belle, and Lucy.[1]

Marriage

Robert Alexander married Elizabeth Richardson Weiseger 2 Oct1814, Franklin Co, KY.[2]

Property

1790 Robert Alexander late of Henrico (VA) now of the District of Kentucky, purchased from William Mercer of the town of Fredricksburg in the county of Spottsylvania and the state of Virginia, for the consideration of £2000 of Virginia money, 2000 acres of land lying in the county of Kentucky, formerly Fincastle, on the waters of the Elkhorn Creek, on the waters of the Ohio.[3]

Robert Alexander built the large stone house on his property, now known as the Alexander Plantation House.[4][5]

He purchased the two thousand acres in 1790 from the estate of General Hugh Mercer in Woodford, Kentucky. This became Woodburn Stud.

Death

Robert Alexander wrote his will 22 May 1839, and it was proven 19 Apr 1841. In it he provides for his heirs, and for those who don't inherit property in Britain. The estate papers include a drawing of his property.[6]
