Alice Louisa Alger was born in Bermondsey on 4 June 1859, and baptised in Newington St Mary's on 20 November 1859, she was the daughter of Joseph Alger and Sarah Hobson[1]
The 1861 census showed the family living in Sidmouth Place, Greenwich: [2]

Alice married Joseph Richard Bates on 25 December 1880 at St Pauls, Dock Street, Whitechapel. She was using the middle name of Susan by now. Their parents were recorded as Joseph Alger, a blacksmith and Joseph Bates, a lighterman. The marriage witnesses were William Alger (Alice's brother), and Clara Jane Mercer (who married William Alger) [4]
The family were living in Moodkee Street, Rotherhithe in 1891 [5]
