Biography

Margaret Allan is related to Christian Allan. I have an audio recording of Alice Oxley, a descendant of Christian Allan, who mentions family visits to relatives in the Walsh family in Adelaide.

Familysearch.org has the birth of a Margaret Allan 21 March 1841 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and christening at Bristo Associate Congregation, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland on 16 May 1841. Father is James Allan, mother is Margaret Farquharson.

In the census of 1841 her address was 42 Home St, Edinburgh.

I believe there is also a connection (which I have not yet been able to make) between Margaret and Euphemia Bowes nee Allen. My ancestor, Isabella Syme (daughter of Christian Allan) was sent out to Australia after the death of her mother, to live with her Aunt, Euphemia Bowes.

The shipping lists give a Margaret Allan, aged 18, from Edinburgh, a domestic servant, arriving as a general immigrant on the Escort in 1859. She appears to have been un-accompanied.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:
