John Allen was born in about 1833. He was the son of Joseph Allen and Mary Common.
John Allen came to the Colony of South Australia as a child on the barque 'Duchess of Northumberland' in 1847. He would have been about 14 years old and travelled with his parents. His family stayed for a time in Adelaide, then moved to Willunga, 30 miles south.
In adult life, John apparently had good fortune in the gold fields of Bendigo, Victoria, for upon his return he purchased the Delabole Slate Quarry, named after a well-known quarry in Cornwall where he was born. He also purchased Waverley Park as a place to raise sheep.
John Allen married Jane (nee Reed) Allen on the 20 January 1857 in St Stephen's Church in Willunga. It is worth noting that Jane had also been a passenger on the "Duchess of Northumberland." They both remained pillars of this pioneer community until their deaths.
John Allen passed away in about March 1917 also in Willunga, and was laid to rest at the St Stephen's Anglican Cemetery, Willunga, South Australia.
