Birth and Christening

Elizabeth ALLEN was born in 1631 in Bacon, Virginia.

The 1691 date is probably meant to be "after 1691," based on death of Robert Caufield/Canfield, her first husband.

Elizabeth Allen, daughter of Arthur Allen, married (1) Capt. Robert Canfield or Caufield, (2) John Jackman. "On June 6, 1700, Joseph John Jackman, gent., of Surry county, and Elizabeth, his wife, sold to John Wilson, of London, merchant, for 30,000 lb of tobacco, 400 acres on Lawnes creek, Surry."^[1]

Elizabeth's father, Arthur Allen, "came to Virginia before 1649, and settled in what is now Surry county. Her brother, Arthur Allen, was speaker of the House of Burgesses."^[1]

John Jackman, Elizabeth's widower, married (2) Mary before 27 April 1714 (date of his will). His will did not name any children, but did name siblings and in-laws, including: "Sister in law Catherine Allen and cosen John and Arthur Allen."^[1] Elizabeth's brother, Arthur Allen, Jr., married Catherine Baker.^[2]

1. 19 January 1691, m. Capt. Robert Caulfield of Lawne's Creek Parish, Surry Co. His will proved 19 January, 1691.

Note: She married John Jackman. Elizabeth dau of Arthur Allen, Jr. is the one that married a Bridger. #date n/a, m. Col William Bridger.^[4]

Death and Burial

: She died in 1691 in Surry, Virginia, at the age of 60.

Locations

The Allen home became known as Bacon's Castle:

"September 18, 1676–December 28, 1676 - During this time, forces loyal to Nathaniel Bacon occupy the former home of Arthur Allen in Surry County. What had been known as Allen's Brick House came to be called Bacon's Castle."^[5]

It is located off Lawne's Creek (see this map). Lawne's Creek and Pagan Creek are used to define the Upper and Lower parishes for Isle of Wight county: "In 1642 the county, heretofore one parish, was divided into two. Lawnes Creek was the northern and Pagan Creek was the southern boundary of the Upper Parish; Pagan Creek the northern and the NAnsemond county line the southern boundary of the Lower Parish.
