  • James
  • Peter m Elizabeth Lambard
  • Mary m John Spagman
  • Anne m Robert Harris
  • Fact: Burial (2 January 1558/1559) St Martin Ludgate, London, England
  • Fact: Occupation Haberdasher London, England
  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Richard Allen was probably born around 1490, either in Outwell or London. His birth predates parish registers. He married Mary, co-heiress of her father Henry Hedde. The “Heralds' Visitation of London in the Year 1568” shows that they had three sons, Thomas, James and Peter, and two daughters, Mary and Anne. In addition, there was another son Richard who was a Haberdasher and a Freeman of the City of London and whose will was proved in 1563.

Richard joined one the Great Twelve livery companies, the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. At the time Haberdashers were principally traders in silks and velvet and other expensive imported cloth. Richard inherited his father’s property at Outwell and most of his London houses. Richard bought further land and buildings in London, in Carter Lane, Philip Lane and Gorell Lane, and in the 1530s he also acquired a house and various parcels of land in Eardisland, Burton, Leominster and Middleton in Herefordshire. When in London Richard lived at various times in St John Street, Clerkenwell, and later in a house in ‘Little Baylie’, which was near the Tower of London. Overall the picture is of a very wealthy and successful man. Richard was buried at St Martin Ludgate on 2 January 1558/59.

Hi Richard, I found a source, which I've added to this profile and a few other related profiles. Unfortunately the source doesn't give a father for Richard Allen. Gillian

Hi Richard, I'm revisiting this profile after a bit of a break. As there are still no sources on the profile, I'd like to remove Thomas Alleyne and Margaret Walkenden as parents. I'll give it a couple of days, and go ahead if I don't hear from you. More than happy to discuss! Thanks, Gillian

Also Richard, I notice you added Thomas Alleyne as the father of this profile. Please could you add the source you have for that. That will be excellent. Thanks
