Biography

Jack was born in 1933. Jack was the child of Carl Allen and Floy Young. Jack passed away in 2008. [1]

THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Jack was born Aug. 11, 1933 in Chariton, Iowa. He was the youngest of five children born to Carl and Floy Allen. He grew up enjoying farm life with his three brothers, Fred, Bob and Keith and his sister, Frances. He was actively involved in 4-H and attended the Chariton schools. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1952. Shortly after graduation, Jack and four of his classmates enlisted in the armed forces. Jack spent four years in the US Navy, spending most of his military career aboard the USS Consolation. Following the service, Jack returned to Chariton to raise his family with his wife, Pauline. Jack had married his high school sweetheart, Pauline Caylor, on April 10, 1952. He soon found employment as a Farm Bureau Insurance Agent, launching his lifetime career as a salesman. Jack joined the Rath Feed Company and utilized his farm background and gift for sales to become one of the top salesmen. He quickly rose to the position of Territorial Manager and earned several awards and trips for his outstanding salesmanship. Upon "retirement" Jack worked part-time for the Shelton Law Firm. He spent several years taking papers to and from the courthouse, manning the phone for the girls over lunch and helping with other tasks as needed. He enjoyed keeping busy even as his pace slowed. Jack enjoyed playing cards, golfing and bowling. He and Pauline enjoyed a host of good times with friends over the years as they joined together to eat, drink, and dance to the tunes often provided by Polly on the piano and Bob Hellyer playing his spoons. Polly and the kids smile as they remember him joyfully doing his Popeye The Sailor dance across the dance floor. Jack's quick wit and humor will be sorely missed. Jack coached Little League as a young man. He and Pauline enjoyed several decades as members of the Lakeview Golf and Country Club. Jack was also a member of the Chariton Masonic Lodge and Lucas County Shrine. Jack and Pauline had five children. Steve, Patti, Angie, Shari and Judy, who died in infancy. During their 56 years of marriage, family has always been a huge part of their lives. Children grandchildren and great-grandchildren will all treasure memories of swimming, boating, lakeside parties and family holidays at Grandpa Jack's. Jack leaves his beloved wife, Pauline; his son Steve (Melody) Allen; daughters, Patti (Jim) Webster, Angie (Brian Martin) Smyser and Shari (Kevin) Johnson; grandchildren, Sean Allen, Robin Craig, Anne (Travis) Swartz, Jon (Bekah) Manser, Jamie (Bruce) Werts, Jered (Shawna) Van Dyne, Michelle Johnson and Rachel Johnson; great-grandchildren, Nate, Cameron, Colbie, Caleb, Maylea, Taylor and Brooklyn; his brother, Bob (Martha) Allen; his sister, Frances Nichols of Longmont, Colorado; and sister-in-law, Bernita Allen of Chariton, IA; and his girls, Sadie and Sarah, his adored terriers. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Floy Allen; step-mother, Pauline Allen; brothers, Fred and Keith Allen; infant daughter, Judith; grandson, Scott Allen; and great-grandson, Kayden Van Dyne.
