JAMES ALLEN: the progenitor of the Allen Family, of Medfield, came to America with his wife Anna, in 1639, and settled in Dedham, Mass. They had a son Joseph: b. June 24, 1652; who married Hannah Sabine, of Seekonk. Ch.:
Children of Joseph and Hannah:
Joseph: b. Dec. 19, 1676.
Daniel: b. 1681; removed to Pomfret, Conn.
David: b. 1683; removed to Pomfret, Conn.
Noah: b. Apr. 21, 1685; m. Sarah Gay, of Dedham.
Eliezer: b. 1688; m. Mary Battelle, of Dover.
Jeremiah: b. 1690; not married.
Hezekiah: b. 1692.
Nehemiah: bapt. May 21, 1699.
Joseph followed the trade of his father in the cooper's shop, making and repairing barrels or casks.[1]
Of the nine children of James, I have taken only one, Joseph, the youngest son of James (to give a more complete genealogy). And of the ten sons and two daughter of Joseph, I have attempted to trace the line of descent only through five of his sons, and, though I have sought information through such sources as were accessible, I have not been able to obtain complete and satisfactory answers relating to those five. Of these five sons, I have been able to obtain reliable information of only four, -- Noah, Eliezer, Hezekiah, and Nehemiah, --- with a brief account of Joseph, the eldest son.
Page 8 states, it appears that Joseph Allen, Sr,, gave to his two sons, Daniel and David, a hundred acres of land in a place called by the Indian name, "Massamoquit," near Woodstock, Conn., where they settled, and probably had families, who extended the name in that neighborhood.
Page 75 gives further information about Joseph.
Joseph greatly enlarged, by purchase, the estate he inherited from his father, and appears to have been a man of energy and influence. As he increased in substance, so he was blessed with a numerous offspring, for whom he made provision as the sons arrived at man's estate, as also by his last will and testament, a copy of which is still preserved.
