Joanne Allen, sister to Roger Alling of New Haven, Connecticut was born in October of 1617 in England, the daughter of James Allen as she is named in his 1656 will as "my daughter Joane, the nowe wife of Abram Dowlittle liveinge nowe alsoe in newe England".[1] For further information on James see his profile.

Research Notes

Her father James spelled his surname (as far as we can tell) as Allen. It is surmised by George Allen in his book on the Alling/Allen family of New Haven, that the reason that early New Haven settlers Roger Alling (bef.1612-1674) and John Alling (of unknown connection) purposefully changed their names to the alternate spelling to distinguish themselves from other Allens from Milford due to religous differences and not wanting to be associated. Allen also indicates that at least one family story exists that upon returning to England at his father's death, Roger "he studied up his ancestral line and found an ancient spelling of the name to have been Ailing, and for that reason changed it". Whatever the reason, Joane is referred to with the spelling her father used, while she is the sister of Roger Alling, a founder of New Haven, CT.

Arrival 1635 Massachusetts:[citation needed]
She married Abraham Doolittle about 1646 (based on estimated birth of first child) probably in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut.
She died about 1661, and before 2 July 1663, the date of Abraham's remarriage to Abigail Moss, probably in New Haven, New Haven Colony.

From her findagrave (note that Joan is not buried at the location, she is memorialized with her husband, but other than noting that she was Abraham's first wife, and that she is buried in New Haven, this only gives information for her):

Why does her profile show her death as 1690 but the bjo explains why it was c1661?

Good catch; 1690 is inaccurate. I will fix.

Jillaine, et al. -- were you lacking a m. record for James & Margaret, or is there another reason for not listing Margaret as the mother? There is a record (I've added it to James's source list) in Bedfordshire for the 1611 m. of James Allen to "Mgt Coppin"... found on NEHGS...

If "Alling" and "Allen" are two possible spellings for her last name, instead of her actual name ("AllingAllen"), then pick one for her last name and the other as an alternate name.

Allen-10193 and Alling-214 appear to represent the same person because: Same vitals, except death; Allen-10193 has source for death; Alling-214 has no sources. Merge direction may not matter-- she shows up in records by both spellings.
