Biography

John was born 25 Oct 1830 in Jefferson Co., Indiana. He lived as a farmer with a brief spell in the militia.[1] He never married but lived with his sister Jane, who kept house for him, until her death. He passed away in 1910 and is buried in Jefferson Co., Indiana.[2][3][4]

This is his sister, Miss Jane Allen's obituary, which speaks to the character of John and his sister, Jane:

There is a reaper whose name is death,
And with his sickle keen;
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath,
And the flowers that grown between."
In the death of Miss Jane ALLEN the Caledonia congregation has suffered an inestimable loss. Her life was one of rare excellence and purity. Gentle in disposition, quite and unassuming, kind and forgiving, hers was a life that in many respects may well be patterned after. After having suffered for about three weeks with heart failure, she on last Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock passed to her final home. On Tuesday afternoon, an ideal autumn day with all nature in harmony, she was interred in the Caledonia cemetery. She was 71 years of age, and leaves a brother, Mr. John ALLEN, of Sugan, for whom she has kept house and a sister, Mrs. Mary GLEN, of McGregor, and many other friends to mourn her loss. Rev. Howard M. JAMIESON delivered an excellent funeral discourse at the church. He has been an intimate friend of the deceased since coming to Caledonia and with many difficulties to content with she has always encouraged her pastor by being a regular attendant at church services. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Robert GLEN, Garrett JAMISON, William WHITTON, John DOW, Calvin ROLLISON and John RALSTON.S164
