Biography

Abel Allen was born October 27, 1794, in Franklin county, Virginia, the son of James Allen and Nancy (Cannady) Allen. [1]

On February 15, 1815 in Warren county, Kentucky, Abel married his cousin Jane Allen, daughter of Stephen Allen. [2] Consent was by James and Stephen Allen. On October 11, 1815 Able was granted 50 acres in Warren Co KY south of the Green River near his parents [3] By 1820 Abel and Jane had two sons and two daughters. On November 21, 1822 Abel and Jane sold their 50 acres of land in Warren Co KY to Henry Johnson and followed his parents James & Nancy Allen and half brother Daniel Ward to Franklin Co IL. By 1830 he had eight children (five sons and three daughters) Jane may have died possibly in childbirth when her youngest son Zadoc was born.

In August 1831 Abel Allen was one of those who helped established the Church of Sugar Camp in Moores Prairie Twp, Jefferson county, Illinois. Abel married for a second time in 1833 at Franklin county, Illinois to Prudence Wilkey, born in Walker county, Georgia, the daughter of Henry & Hester (Maxey) Wilkey. Abel and Prudence were the parents of six sons (and no daughters):

  • George Washington ALLEN b. Apr. 4,1837
  • Alexander ALLEN b. 1842
  • Lewis ALLEN b.1842
  • Henry C. ALLEN b.1844
  • Christopher C. ALLEN b.1846

Abel died March 29, 1869 at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 2 days. He is buried in the cemetery of the Sugar Camp Church, in Jefferson County, Illinois, of which he was a founding member. [4]

Researcher's Notes

Prudence's brother Carter Wilkey was one of the earliest settlers in Jefferson Co. Illinois. He came with others in 1816. Their mother, Hester, a widow and a brother Bennet Maxwell, Prudence and Richard Wilkey and other family members came before 1820. Bennett Maxey Wilkey (w/ wife and child) and Carter arrived with their mother on 16 Oct 1816 according to Jefferson County, IL History/Biography book published in 1883)

Church records of the Ten Mile Church, Hamilton Co. Il. August 1831 *Abel ALLEN, along with Patrick ROSS, William STURMAN, Sally STURMAN, Martha STURMAN, Daniel WILBANKS, Jane WILBANKS, Silas DOWNER, Delphia SCRIVNER, asked for permission to start the church of Sugar Camp in Moores Prairie Twsp. Jefferson Co. Il. Jane's name was not listed.
