Biography

Matthew Allen Sr. immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Matthew or Mathew Allen was born about 1627 in England, and was the eldest child of George Allen's second wife Katharine _______. [1]

Although Anderson places his year of birth at 1629 (probably derived from the Hull Sailing manifest, which lists his age as 6 in 1635), his name appears on the 1643 Able-To-Bear-Arms list for Sandwich, while brother William's does not. [1]

Matthew Allen and Sara Kirby married June, 1654. Matthew was listed as the son of George Allen, Sr.. [2] Year of marriage 1657. Sarah, who was the daughter of Richard Kirby of Sandwich, had been born in 1638. [1]

Sometime after their marriage, Matthew and Sarah settled at Dartmouth in Bristol County, Massachusetts. [1]

Seven children named in Matthew's will: [1]

  1. Dorothy b. 8 April 1659 at Sandwich. [3] m. ca. 1678 to John Colvin in the New Plymouth Colony. d. ca. 1724 in the Colony of Rhode Island

  3. Deborah b. May 1663 at Dartmouth. [4]
  4. Samuel b. February 1665/1666 [5] at Dartmouth (unmarried)

Death and estate

Matthew died probably at Dartmouth before 23 May 1695 when his estate was inventoried and his will was proved. His will was dated 07 February 1688[/9?] and proved 23 May 1695. The inventory of his estate was dated the first day, third month "commonly caled May" 1695. Sarah Allen, relict and executrix, made oath to the inventory of his estate on 23 May 1695. [8]

Per category instructions, we're not supposed to use Category:Quakers on individual profiles. Looks like the correct category here should be Category:Sandwich_Monthly_Meeting%2C_Massachusetts

I don't see a category for Barnstable
