"George Columbus, father of US Senator James Browning Allen, was born near Ashland, Clay County, Alabama in 1872. As a young man, he was president of the old Ashland College and was early recognized as a gifted teacher. He also taught school in North Alabama and Texas. But his ambition was to become a lawyer and he spent every spare moment in dedicated study 'reading the law.' He settled in Gadsen, Alabama about 1900 and soon became a partner in a well established law firm. GC Allen served his city as alderman and the County of Etowah as deputy solicitor, and from 1931 to 1935 he served the county as a member of the State Legislature. He was regarded as one of the ablest members of the local bar and was known over the state as a brilliant and successful lawyer. He was thoroughly reliable and trust-worthy. He had a sweet disposition and was loved by all who knew him. When he died suddenly of a heart attack on September 1, 1935 at age 63, the local newspaper referred to him as 'one of the most beloved citizens of Gadsden.' He married Miss Mary Browning of Gadsden, Alabama about 1906-07. They had three children." From Personal records of Mary Beth Matthews, Carrie Lou Allen, and Juanita Jordan.
