Biography
William Allen was born in about 1823 in Upwell, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.
William Allen married Maria Smith in 1848. The marriage was registered in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire in the last quarter of the year.[1]
William and Maria had six [or seven] daughters, though most of them died very young:
Sarah Ann Allen (1850-1857)
Hannah Maria Allen (1851-b.1853?)
Anna Maria Allen (1853-1854)
Mary Ann Allen (1856-b.1858?)
Mary Jane Allen (1858-b.1861?)
Sarah Ann Allen (1859-)
On one census another daughter is listed, but she may be a niece or other relative:
Eliza Allen (1856-) [There is no birth of an Eliza Allen registered with mother's maiden name Smith - the only Elizas have no mother's maiden name listed, indicating they were born to unmarried women - she may have been William's niece]
In 1851 William Allen (age 28, Agricultural Labourer) lived at Shrewsness Green in Upwell Isle, Cambridgeshire with his wife Mariah (24, Agricultural Labourer) and daughter Sarah (1).[2]
In 1861 William Allen (age 38, Farmer Labourer) lived in Upwell with his wife Maria (36, Farmers Wife) and two daughters [or one niece and a daughter?]: Eliza (6, Farmers Daughter) and Sarah (1, Farmers Daughter).[3]
William Allen passed away in 1866, aged 43 or 44 years. His death was registered in Wisbech in the second quarter of the year.[4][5]
