Churchwell H. Allen was born on July 17, 1851 [1] in Alabama. He was the first son of Beverly Allen and his first wife Mary Goss Allen.
Churchwell's mother died in about 1855 when he was about four years old. In addition to Churchwell there was a son, Charles S. H. born in 1853, and daughter, Mahala born in 1855. His father married Marina Serina Goss, Mary's younger sister on 22 November 1855 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. [2]
In the 1860 U. S. Census (14 August 1860), [3]
the family including Beverly and Marina S. Allen was in Milltown, Chambers County. Beverly was thirty-two years old and was quite wealthy based on owning real estate valued at $6000 and personal estate valued at $3000. The children included Churchwell age 9, Charles age 7, and Mahala age 5. There were three half siblings; Elizabeth age 4, Fleming age 2 and Lucy age 1.
Two more children were born Alice Beatrice and Mary Jane before the death of Beverly Allen on 20 December 1862. This was during the Civil War, but no death records have been located to indicate if the death was related to the war. Churchwell was about twelve years old. Marina never remarried and remained a single mother of her five children and three stepchildren / niece and nephews.
In the 1870 U. S. Census [4] Serina and all of the children still lived on the farm which was valued at $2000 and a personal estate of $500. Churchill was listed as being twenty-eight but would have actually been only twenty. He was listed as a farm hand.
Churchwell married Mary Elizabeth Bishop on January 30, 1873 in Chambers County Alabama. [5]
In the 1880 U. S. Census (12 June 1880), [6] the family lived in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. Churchwell was listed as Church Allen a twenty-eight year old farmer. Mary E. was keeping house and they had four daughters; Leola age 6, Emma age 5, Sarah age 2 and Matildia age 5 months.
In the 1900 U. S. Census (22 June 1900), [7] the family owned the farm free of a mortgage. Churchwell was listed as C. H. Allen and he was still farming. He and Mary had been married twenty-seven years and had thirteen children with twelve living in 1900. Leola had died in 1892. The children still at home were: Matilda age 20, Bevely (Beverly) and Benjamin age 16, John age 14, William age 11, Olie (Oliver) age 9, Mollie age 6, Allie age 3, and Lilly age 1. All of the older children were listed as farm laborers and attended school for one or two months.
In the 1910 U. S. Census (16 April 1910), [8] the family remained in Milltown. Churchwell was again listed as Church H. Allen. He and three sons, Ben, Billy (Beverly) and Oliver were all listed as farmers doing general farming and working on their own account. The farm is listed as being owned free of mortgage by Church. I think the farm was the land that his father, Beverly Allen had owned. Three daughters were still at home and attending school: Molly age 16, Alley age 14 and Lillie age 11.
Churchwell died on 21 November 1916. He is buried at Allen Cemetery Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. [1]
I have seen Churchwell and Churchill used in different records.
