Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that her parents were George Allen and Katherine and she was born in about 1602 in Somerset. These claims have been removed pending the discovery of any reliable source to support them.

Disputed Child

John Briggs was previously attached as a child, without any supporting source. Aside from the lack of any reliable source for the claim, his profile indicates he was born in abt 1614, which was more than 15 years earlier than the only known marriage of Joan.

Biography

Joan Allen was likely born before 1613, based on the date of her marriage. Nothing further is known of her origins.

She was married by March 1, 1630/1 to Clement Briggs by Mr. Tho. Stoughton, constable of Dorchester; for which he was fined L5 "for taking upon him to marry Clement Briggs and Joane Allen.[1][2]

Clement and Joane had two children, born at Weymouth:[1]
  1. Thomas was born June 14, 1633. He married Ann (_____).
  2. Jonathan was born June 14, 1635. He married Experience (_____) by about 1664.

At the Quarter Court at Cambridge, Clement Briggs gave a bond of L10 for the appearance of his wife at the next court. Arthur Warren was presented at the same court "for keeping company with Clement Brigg's wife, which was found to be true. On June 5, 1638 at the Quarter Court, Clement Brigg's wife was "enjoined not to come into the company of Arthur Warren.[1]

Joan (Allen) Briggs died by 1640[1]at Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts.

The profile gives the name of her parents, but they are not shown in the data fields. I see that her father was removed. According to his profile, George Allen and Katherine ______ married too late for Katherine to be her mother. No daughter Joan is listed for George on his profile.

Are there reliable sources that show her parents? Anderson did not show them.

The answer is no. I've just looked at whatever contemporary sources there are and there isn't any credible evidence to support the idea that she was a daughter of George Allen by any wife. My guess is that someone found an early Allen family in MA Bay Colony and plugged her into it. He appears to have had sons for whom no parish baptisms in England are available online, and evidently before he married Katherine in 1624, so maybe she was a child of a first wife. But that doesn't justify adding her to George's family. It would be very random. She could have come as a servant to New England in one of the many Great Migration ships for which there are no passenger lists available. That would leave a huge field of Allen families in England as possibilities. I also see no reason to estimate her birth in 1602, or put it in Somerset. Surely a repetition of bad information from personal ancestry databases. As alway, credible evidence otherwise is welcome.

Since no one has presented any source for them in the year since Sharon's original post, I have removed those claims and added Research Notes.

I do not see any sources for the information in this book. It appears to be a family genealogy that was published, perhaps for a wedding anniversary. In the table of contents there is nothing like Sources/References/Citations noted.

From the reviews I read of the book, it has at least several inaccuracies.

No, this should not be considered an update of Anderson's work.
